The Clayton Ridge/Central baseball team took on the Bellevue Comets in the first round of postseason play July 13, losing 8-1.

The War Eagles finished the season with a 4-14 record (3-12 in the Upper Iowa Conference).

While the team’s offensive MVP, Oakley Harbaugh, opened the game with an RBI, giving the War Eagles a short-lived lead, the Comets answered, scoring eight runs on seven hits. Bellevue also benefited from 11 walks by War Eagle pitchers, who struggled throughout the season to “find their groove,” in the words of head coach Zach Mueller.

Labor of love: Home restoration creates another lodging option in Monona

Owner Rachel Thurn and her family spent nine months restoring the Driftless Manor Getaway, a historic brick home on South Egbert Street in Monona. (Photo by Audrey Posten)

“The response from the community has been great,” shared Rachel. “People have already contacted us about renting it for anniversaries or weddings. They’re excited to stay here.” (Photo by Audrey Posten)

Renovations included gutting and changing the layout of the kitchen, raising the ceilings and enlarging the full bathroom. Paint and flooring were also updated. (Submitted photo)

Not everything required modernization. The home’s original woodwork, which includes beautiful pocket doors and trim, was in good shape. The other updates merely enhanced those unique qualities. (Submitted photo)

The Driftless Manor Getaway has four bedrooms: two with a king-sized bed in each, one with two queen-sized beds and a “bunk bed room” with space for five people. In all, the home can comfortably sleep 15 guests.

Picking the colors and selecting furniture and decor were among the easiest items on the to-do list. Rachel said she regularly browsed Facebook Marketplace for pieces. “The community sort of helped furnish the home,” she joked.

Monona has added its second lodging establishment in less than a year. The Driftless Manor Getaway, a historic brick home on South Egbert Street, began welcoming guests through the vacation rental website Airbnb in June.

Visitors aren’t the only ones happy about the new accommodations. Owner Rachel Thurn said Monona residents are just as excited about the home’s potential.

“The response from the community has been great,” she shared. “People have already contacted us about renting it for anniversaries or weddings. They’re excited to stay here.”

Elkader Council vote puts Sweet Corn Days in question

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

Even after numerous committee meetings, city council votes and contentious public debate, the fate of Elkader’s Sweet Corn Days, much like everything else during the COVID-19 pandemic, is uncertain—even two weeks after it was announced the annual celebration would move forward. The event, which is currently scheduled to take place on July 24 and 25, went back to the city council Monday evening to obtain approval for street closures, noise permits and a fireworks permit. The same council previously approved the liquor license for Sweet Corn Days, so approval seemed like a forgone conclusion…until it wasn’t.

Monona holds off on putting airport up for sale

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

The Monona Council, at its July 6 regular meeting, agreed to give the Monona Airport Board until Oct. 1 to develop options to increase funding at the airport before determining if the property should be put up for sale.

A potential buyer approached the city about purchasing the airport property, which is located three miles southeast of Monona, over a month ago. Declining revenue and a drop in use has forced the council to seriously consider the idea.
