The MFL MarMac cross country team kicked off its season Sept. 3, in the lone home meet at Tri-City Golf Course outside Luana.

The team was led by junior Sydney Moser, who raced to a fifth-place finish with a time of 22:18.00. Freshman Clare Grau earned a time of 23:42.50, placing her 12th. Fellow freshmen Kaylee Walch and Ayla Gerndt finished 20th and 21st, respectively, with marks of 25:53.70 and 26:02.50. Ruby Koeller, another freshman, came in 26th at 28:43.60, while freshman Kaylee Nuehring took the 31st spot with a 30:04.70 time.

The MFL MarMac volleyball team dropped to 0-3 last week, following losses to New Hampton and host Turkey Valley at a triangular on Sept. 1

The Bulldogs were swept by New Hampton, 2-0, in the first game, with set scores of 25-19 and 25-17.

In the second game, MFL MarMac fell to Turkey valley 2-1. The match-up started off well for the Bulldogs, who won the first set 25-17—their first set victory this season. They struggled to keep the momentum going in the final two, though, losing 25-14 and 15-12.

MFL MarMac will participate in another triangular this week, taking on West Central and host Maquoketa Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

As the community will at some point attempt to navigate the world post-COVID-19, Main Street Elkader, in conjunction with Main Street Iowa, recently conducted a pulse poll survey as a way to “gauge community readiness, aid recovery efforts, and guide business and organizations with next steps,” according to Kate Lower, executive director of Main Street Elkader. 

The feedback from the poll, which was sent out via email and on social media platforms, providing a random sampling of participants, will also be used by the Main Street Economic Vitality Committee to assist in making decisions “regarding events, business recruitment, and marketing efforts,” Lower added.

The recent Elkader City Council meeting had a touch of déjà vu as Carter Street was back on the agenda after having seemingly cleared the necessary hurdle of approval at the previous meeting, when the council approved the street width of 28 feet and the sidewalk width of four-feet. 

However, a surprise veto by Mayor Josh Pope created a new round of debate and questions, though none of them from residents, who were no longer allowed to make comments on the issue, because, as Pope said, “They’d already been made.”
