Bulldog football team cruises to 2-0 record

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

The MFL MarMac football team upped its record to 2-0 Sept. 4, with a convincing 35-13 victory at Alburnett.

Like the previous week, where the Bulldogs’ special teams tallied two touchdowns before the offense even took the field, Friday night’s game got off to a fast start. Just 13 seconds in, sophomore Karter Decker returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, and MFL MarMac went up 7-0.

Around a minute later, after a huge completion from senior quarterback Max Havlicek to senior receiver Cayden Ball, junior running back Cullen McShane scored from five yards out, giving the Bulldogs a 13-0 advantage.

New Hampton, Turkey Valley too much for Bulldogs

The MFL MarMac volleyball team dropped to 0-3 last week, following losses to New Hampton and host Turkey Valley at a triangular on Sept. 1

The Bulldogs were swept by New Hampton, 2-0, in the first game, with set scores of 25-19 and 25-17.

In the second game, MFL MarMac fell to Turkey valley 2-1. The match-up started off well for the Bulldogs, who won the first set 25-17—their first set victory this season. They struggled to keep the momentum going in the final two, though, losing 25-14 and 15-12.

MFL MarMac will participate in another triangular this week, taking on West Central and host Maquoketa Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

From wood and resin: Artist uses lathe to create beautiful pieces

Creativity manifests itself differently for each person—just ask Ryan Chambers.

“I can’t draw a stick person,” he joked, “but I can make something out of wood or resin.”

With the materials as a base, the Monona artist, who began exhibiting at McGregor’s Left Bank Shop and Gallery earlier this year, uses a lathe to form them into beautiful, curved objects like bowls, vases and pots. He’s even developed custom items like duck calls and rings.

It all started around five years ago, with a woodturning interest and some instructional YouTube videos.

Main Street Elkader takes community pulse poll

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

As the community will at some point attempt to navigate the world post-COVID-19, Main Street Elkader, in conjunction with Main Street Iowa, recently conducted a pulse poll survey as a way to “gauge community readiness, aid recovery efforts, and guide business and organizations with next steps,” according to Kate Lower, executive director of Main Street Elkader.

The feedback from the poll, which was sent out via email and on social media platforms, providing a random sampling of participants, will also be used by the Main Street Economic Vitality Committee to assist in making decisions “regarding events, business recruitment, and marketing efforts,” Lower added.

If you haven’t responded to the 2020 U.S. Census, you’ll soon have a visitor knocking at your door—if you haven’t already.

Joan Burns, who’s based in McGregor, is one of at least a dozen enumerators traveling around Clayton County to assure residents are counted.

“It’s easy and doesn’t take much time,” she stressed. “And it’s so important. The trade-off is increased federal funding at the local, county and state levels for roads, social services, hospitals and schools. It also reallocates members of the U.S. House of Representatives.”

Elkader Council overrides mayoral veto on Carter Street, talks chickens

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

The recent Elkader City Council meeting had a touch of déjà vu as Carter Street was back on the agenda after having seemingly cleared the necessary hurdle of approval at the previous meeting, when the council approved the street width of 28 feet and the sidewalk width of four-feet.

However, a surprise veto by Mayor Josh Pope created a new round of debate and questions, though none of them from residents, who were no longer allowed to make comments on the issue, because, as Pope said, “They’d already been made.”

CAMPAIGNING DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC: Kayla Koether (D), House District 55

Kayla Koether

In the midst of an election year, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted how political candidates typically connect with voters. Over the next few weeks, the Times-Register will share how some local candidates have adapted—how they’re “meeting” constituents and continuing to share their ideas.

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

It was never the logical progression for the northeast Iowa native—politics and running for office, that is. But Kayla Koether, after losing by nine votes in a controversial defeat in 2018 that saw absentee ballots go uncounted, is once again challenging for the Iowa House, District 55.
