Elkader’s Star on the Hill returns after resident rebuilds it to honor late wife


Jack Niewoehner stands next to Elkader’s new Star on the Hill, which he re-built and erected in honor of his late wife Randa.

The new star stands next to the old wooden star, still sitting up on the hill. The tradition dates back to 1955, when the star was first erected by the Elkader Rotary Club. A cross was later added.

Keystone AEA administrator weighs in on proposed changes


Covering 22 school districts across Allamakee, Chickasaw, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Howard and Winneshiek counties, Keystone is one of nine regional AEAs that provides special education services, media and curriculum, instruction and assessment and professional development support to Iowa children, families and educators.

The AEA services highlighted in yellow are what could be cut through a proposed bill that would overhaul the AEA system.

Berns and Medberry earn trip to state

Three straight falls helped Mayleigh Medberry reach the 130-pound championship match at the regional qualifier. She placed second, within the top four needed to advance to state.

Brynn Meyer finished the tournament 2-2 in the 110-pound weight class.

Taylor Moser went 2-2 at 125 pounds.

Crystal Goodrich (155 pounds) wrestled hard in her two matches at the regional/state qualifying tournament in Mason City.

Kimberly Suhr competed in two matches at 135 pounds.

Central wrestlers Reese Berns and Mayleigh Medberry are headed to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union state wrestling tournament. Both punched their tickets with second place finishes at the Jan. 26 regional qualifier in Mason City.
