LaVonne K. Luther

LaVonne K. Luther, 100, passed away on March 30, 2024, at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Fla. LaVonne was from Oelwein, where she met her future husband, Bill, while they were in school. They both graduated from Luther College in Decorah. For three years, she was an elementary school teacher in northeast Iowa until her son, Greg, was born. In 1955, LaVonne and Bill moved to McGregor, where they successfully owned and operated a hotel, motel, restaurant, pub and gift shop. In 1967, LaVonne and family moved to Florida where she worked for the Ormond Beach Police Department. In 1984, LaVonne and Bill returned to McGregor and ran the Noah’s Ark Gift Shop.

The ‘GOAT’ of class pets?

Everitt selected as Stars Over Iowa finalist

Central Community FFA member Jordan Everitt has been selected as a Stars Over Iowa finalist in the area of agribusiness. Jordan will be recognized at the 96th Iowa FFA State Leadership Conference in Ames April 14-16. The finalists were selected from a pool of 793 FFA members who will earn the Iowa FFA Degree, the highest honor the Iowa FFA Association can bestow upon an FFA member.

Kevin L. Brainard Jr.

Kevin Lee Brainard Jr., 47, of Chisholm, Minn., died April 2, 2024, at Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Duluth. He was born Oct. 18, 1976, in Postville, to Kevin Sr. and Janice (Doubek) Brainard and was a longtime Chisholm resident. Kevin was a U. S. Marine veteran. He worked as a millwright for Keetac, U.S. Steel. Kevin was united in marriage to Sarah Shackelton on June 21, 2003 in Chisholm. He was a member of the Northern Traxx ATV Club and the USW Union #2660. He was always proud to be an Eagle Scout when he was younger and was an avid sports fan, cheering on the Chicago Bears and Minnesota Wild, and was a loyal ESPN fan.

Peggy C. Puhl

Peggy Clarene Puhl, 80, of McGregor, passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Peggy was born Jan. 26, 1944, to Edward and Clara (Habeger) Bohonek in California. She graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1963. Peggy was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo.
