Jaaren Riebe (left), representing the Prairie du Chien Class of 1986, recently presented a donation for $500 to Mary Ann Heisz, of the Great River Relay For Life to be used toward the Cancer Kickin’ Concert on May 9 in Prairie du Chien.

The Great River Relay For Life is hosting a Cancer Kickin’ Concert Saturday, May 9, from 7 to 11 p.m., at Huckleberry’s Banquet Facility in Prairie du Chien. The Back Home Boys will entertain the crowd throughout the evening and, about halfway through their set, there will be an auction. The highlight of the auction is a 2014-15 Wisconsin Badgers men’s autographed basketball.

Support the local food pantry and help “Stamp Out Hunger” again this year by donating a bag of non-perishable food to the Letter Carriers Food Drive Saturday, May 9. Sponsored by the United States Postal Service, National Association of Letter Carriers and Feeding America, residents of southwest Wisconsin are encouraged to give what they can to help those in need.

Sand Loading Site

The Wisconsin and Southern Railroad has been constructing a sand loading facility that will be used by the Pattison Sand Company. The two silos in the upper left portion of the photo can hold 250 tons of sand each. The new equipment being installed will be inside a building when the project is complete. Take your pick from the Memorial Gardens Plant Sale

You too can have a “garden of dreams” if you stop by the St. Feriole Island Memorial Gardens on Saturday, May 9 to take your pick from a variety of plants and flowers available at the annual Plant Sale. Whether you’re looking to fill a whole garden, find some blooms to complement a couple pots, or pick up that perfect Mother’s Day gift, the annual Memorial Gardens Plant Sale will offer a beautiful variety of flowers for everyone. On Saturday, May 9, from 8 a.m. to noon, at Prairie du Chien’s Memorial Gardens on St. Feriole Island, the public is invited to browse through the loads of colorful flowers and plants and purchase their favorites. All proceeds will go back into the Memorial Gardens.

A wide assortment of blossoms such as coneflowers, sedum, lilies—Stella De Oro daylilies and tiger lilies—hostas, different types of groundcover and more will be sold at various prices. As many as 400 lilies are expected. Many of the flowers and plants will even be potted and ready to go, or you can bring your own pots, containers or leaf bags and fill them on site. Wood chips in natural colors can also be purchased at the sale.

PdC Uncorked wine tasting to showcase Marquette Road businesses

The Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce will present a new event, PdC Uncorked, on Friday, May 15 from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

PdC Uncorked is an exclusive, one of a kind experience allowing guests 21 years and older to sample newly-released regional wines and hors d’oeuvres while strolling between some of the finest businesses along Marquette Road in the Prairie du Chien area. Participating retailers are within a short walk from each other. Each guest will begin the wine tasting event at Zinkle’s Piggly Wiggly/Blooming Basket at Riverside Square Mall.

“The idea for PdC Uncorked was to showcase all the great businesses that typically don’t get a lot of traffic from parades and other downtown promotions,” Chamber President and CEO Bob Moses said.

City to host public meeting on North Ohio Street project

The city of Prairie du Chien will host a public information meeting on Tuesday, May 5, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., to review the upcoming North Ohio Street project. It will take place in the council chambers at city hall. Representatives from the city and Vierbicher Associates, the city’s consultant on the project, will be in attendance.

The project involves the reconstruction of North Ohio Street from Blackhawk Avenue (State Highway 27) to Washington Street. It will consist of the following:

•Reconstruction of 1,600 lineal feet of 32-foot-wide street.

•Reconstruction of 3,200 lineal feet of concrete curb and gutter.

•Reconstruction of 3,000 lineal feet of 5-foot sidewalk.

•Reconstruction of 1,550 lineal feet of sanitary sewer, manholes and laterals (to the street right-of-way).

•Reconstruction of 1,650 lineal feet of water main, hydrants, valves and services (to the street right-of-way).

Top 2 seniors named at River Ridge High School

River Ridge has named its valedictorian and salutatorian for the class of 2015. Kari Breuer, daughter of Joe and Cindi Breuer, of Glen Haven, is the valedictorian. Tanner Irish, son of Tom and Lori Irish, of Bagley, is the salutatorian.

Kari Breuer will attend UW-River Falls and major in animal science this fall. She is excited about meeting new people and having new experiences.

As her high school career comes to a close, Kari is proud to have achieved a 3.982 cumulative GPA, made the high honor roll all four years, and scored a 29 on her ACT. She was a National Merit semifinalist as well.

She was active in the Science Club, FFA Chapter as treasurer and National Honor Society as secretary. She also served as track manager for three years and wrestling manager for one year.

Pedaling for Pets

Ashley and Brandon Christensen, pictured with their dog Nibbles, are taking on their own Pedaling for Pets challenge this summer. They will be bicycling 750 miles from Prairie du Chien to the Bayfield area and back, from Aug. 16 to Sept. 6. They have eight checkpoints along the way, where they will stop at animal shelters and humane societies to gain knowledge and spread awareness about Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter. All funds raised from this journey will benefit RABAS and its efforts toward building a local animal shelter.
