One-vehicle accident causes injury

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a one-vehicle crash with unknown injuries near 10243 Tavern Road north of Soldiers Grove.

The driver was Rebecca J. Spencer, 17, Gays Mills. Spencer was negotiating a curve on Tavern Road in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee when the vehicle started to slide. Spencer over corrected which caused her vehicle to spin around. The passenger side of the vehicle struck the embankment and the vehicle came to rest on all four tires.

After the crash, Spencer was able to drive the vehicle to a nearby house to get help. The vehicle sustained moderate damage. Spencer was transported to Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua by North Crawford EMS.

Assisting at the scene were the Soldiers Grove Fire Department and the North Crawford EMS.

Report of reckless driving leads to meth bust

On Jan. 26, the Prairie du Chien Police Department was notified of a vehicle driving recklessly in the Prairie Cinema parking lot in the city of Prairie du Chien. Officers located a vehicle parked in the parking lot and eventually arrested the driver on an outstanding warrant.

The driver, Jill Schroeder, 38, stated that she was waiting to pick up another individual from the area. The second individual is a known drug user in the Crawford County area.

Officers requested the assistance of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department and K9 Breck. K9 Breck was utilized and indicated to the presence of one or more controlled substances within the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted based on the indication from K9 Breck and yielded three used methamphetamine needles with residue still inside, a pink straw with methamphetamine residue, and a spoon with burnt narcotic residue.

New behavioral health center fills service need across region

For three months now, the new Crossing Rivers Health Center for Behavioral Health has provided services for adults, children and adolescents with mental or behavioral health concerns. It was an area that communities identified as a service needed to improve community health. The center, which opened Nov. 2, is located at 705 S. Buchanan St., Prairie du Chien, in the former CARE office. Staff is ready to help individuals achieve mental well-being and encounter everyday challenges with confidence and satisfaction.

A $600,000 grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration was awarded to Crossing Rivers to increase access for such a need in the region, according to Dr. Steven Bush, CRH chief medical officer.

Lock and Dam 9 Maintenance

Seven bulkheads (left) were placed and sealed in order to hold back water so that the lock chamber could be drained and pumped out. Seven bulkheads were also placed at the downstream end of the lock chamber. The upstream gate (above) and the downstream gate will be sandblasted, painted and have maintenance work performed on them.

Repairs are being done at various locations on both of the lock chamber walls. At the base of the wall are drain holes.

Iowa man gets one year for OWI, hitting pedestrian

A Farmersburg, Iowa, man was sentenced in Crawford County Circuit Court to one year in jail and five years of probation for striking a pedestrian while driving drunk in Prairie du Chien.

Christopher K. Gossman, 33, had pleaded no contest to charges of hit-and-run involving great bodily harm, and causing injury while operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant. Gossman was granted work and school release while in jail. According to the criminal complaint, Tracy Hutchins, 63, Prairie du Chien,was crossing at the intersection of Blackhawk Avenue and Michigan Street at 10:40 p.m. on Oct. 31, when an eastbound vehicle driven by Gossman struck Hutchins and fled the scene. The vehicle was later located in Clayton County, Iowa.

Man charged: drug possession, intent to distribute

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, its K-9 Breck and the Prairie du Chien Police Department collaborated on an apprehension involving narcotics in Prairie du Chien Township on Jan. 16.

At about 4:30 a.m., K-9 Breck detected a controlled substance on the exterior of several parked vehicles in the parking lot of Casey’s General Store. He indicated to the presence of one or more controlled substances on a Buick LeSabre. The operator, Christopher Fernette, 38, of Prairie du Chien, was informed and a search of the vehicle based off the indication from the K-9 followed.

Deputies located methamphetamine individually packaged for sale, marijuana, methamphetamine paraphernalia smoking devices, needles used to ingest methamphetamine, a digital scale and a schedule II narcotic on Fernette’s person and vehicle.

K-9 Breck assists in search, arrest

A Readstown man faces charges of trespassing and resisting/obstructing law enforcement after a disturbance in Soldiers Grove Monday night, Jan. 25, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

At 11:33 p.m., the sheriff’s department was called to 102 Prospect St. for an incident involving suspect Steven Swadley, 40. As law enforcement was responding, Swadley stole a cell phone from someone inside the residence and ran off into the woods. He was wanted by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department for felony bail jumping and a violation of a domestic injunction.

Two arrested in connection with numerous Crawford, Clayton County burglaries

Numerous storage units, enclosed trailers and sheds were burglarized and an estimated value of over $10,000 in property was stolen over the past month in Crawford and Clayton Counties. Two Prairie du Chien men were arrested last week in connection with the crimes, according to local law enforcement officials.

Following a collaborative investigation involving the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, Prairie du Chien Police Department, Mar-Mac Police Department and Monona Police Department, Roman Hertrampf, 23, and Joshua Schomacker, 33, are accused of the alleged burglaries in Prairie du Chien, Bridgeport, and Gays Mills in Wisconsin and the McGregor/Giard areas as well as Monona in Iowa. Both the men have confessed, Prairie du Chien Detective Stacy Polodna said.

The story behind a local teen’s suicidal jump off high school roof

Ryan Friedrich, 16, of Mount Hope, jumped from the second floor roof of Prairie du Chien High School on Dec. 2. He broke vertebrae in his middle back and shattered his right arm. He’s been recuperating at home and meeting with physical and mental illness experts ever since. Ryan Friedrich can’t recall his exact thoughts but he does remember the desolate moments before and after he jumped from the second-floor roof of Prairie du Chien High School, attempting to commit suicide.

“I walked to the edge, sat down and pushed myself off,” he reflected, when asked to describe his actions that morning, Wednesday, Dec. 2. “I was thinking about my life. There was just no point to it.

“Afterward, I laid in pain for awhile. The next thing I remember was waking up at the hospital. I was still depressed, and drugged up.”
