Around 225 served monthly at free Come for Supper meal

Families, friends and strangers from all communities, needs and denominations are invited to attend the free monthly Come for Supper meal in the basement of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien. Always the third Thursday of the month, Feb. 18 is the next supper, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Cheeseburger soup is the main dish on this month’s menu.

An average of 225 meals are served by volunteers, once a month, for those who seek good company, are trying to make ends meet, or simply want a night off from cooking.

The Prairie du Chien Come for Supper provision has been offered publicly since April 2009, when a local group of about five volunteers helped out at a free meal at Our Savior’s church in La Crosse and fell in love with the idea.

“We had no idea, when we started, that we’d become part of a movement,” Pastor Joe Irvin said, recognizing that a multitude of similar meals are shared in communities across the region.

The River Ridge Dance Team performs during the regional competition which earned them their first trip since 2003 to the State Competition at the La Crosse Center on Saturday, Feb. 6. The team finished 10th at the State Competition.

 

River Ridge dancers 10th in state poms

On Saturday, Feb. 6, the River Ridge Dance Team attended the WACPC State Championship held at the La Crosse Center. The team competed in the Division 5 pom category. The girls placed 10th in the state for their division.

Qualifying and dancing at state for the dance team is a great accomplishment that hasn’t happened at River Ridge since 2003.

Hawkettes make school history

The Prairie du Chien Hawkettes attended the Wisconsin Association of Cheer and Pom Coaches (WACPC) State Dance Championships Saturday, Feb. 6 at the La Crosse Center. The team competed at state in two categories. Teams placing in the top five at state took home hardware. 

The Hawkettes placed fifth in the Division 2 kick category, earning their first ever placing trophy at state. The girls also placed sixth at state in the Division 4 pom category, missing placing at state by only a small margin.

Seneca native follows passions to the East Coast

Mark Anthony Dingbaum, a 2004 Seneca High School graduate, is pictured giving a campaign press conference in Los Angeles while working at Change.org. Though he misses his family and the relaxing rural atmosphere of the family farm in Seneca at times, he’s proud to have followed his passions and made a difference while working in digital communications.

A passion for public service, community organizing and technology have provided a foundation for a career that Mark Anthony Dingbaum, a Seneca native now living and working in New York, N.Y., never believed he might someday experience.

He could have never dreamed he would have a hand in the Boy Scouts of America’s historic vote to overturn its ban on gay members. He also couldn’t have imagined being appointed by the nation’s president to serve in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

Yet, these achievements are now reality for the 2004 Seneca High School graduate.

Collecting pop tabs might seem trivial, but for Ronald McDonald House Charities, collection is taken very seriously.

The Bagley chapter of the Royal Neighbors of America received an informative presentation about the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester, Minn., at its February meeting last week. Nancy Rogers, who has worked for the La Crosse McDonalds chapter for 30 years, explained that pop tabs are collected at the local stores, put in French fry boxes, packaged, labeled, weighed and recycled.

The designated Ronald McDonald House then receives the cash made from the recycled aluminum tabs, per pound. That income is used to pay salaries for the care physicians living at the house and to help families dealing with the stress and financial difficulties of being away from home.

Two wild deer killed in Allamakee County during the recent hunting season have been confirmed positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD), marking the third year in a row the disease has been confirmed in a wild Iowa deer, all in Allamakee County.

Haydn Street crossing ruled closed a fourth time

The Haydn Street railroad crossing in Prairie du Chien was ordered closed two years ago by the Wisconsin railroad commissioner, for the third time. Even after a fourth decision, last summer by the circuit court, to dismiss an appeal and close the crossing, it remains open today.

The two mainline tracks and the nearby spur track intersecting with Haydn Street have been in question for more than 15 years.

The first decision to close the crossing was made by the commissioner in 2001. Because nearby business owner Keith Coburn, of Frazier’s Old Faithful Inn, felt it would adversely affect his business to close the crossing, he’s exercised his rights and kept fighting the railroad for a decade and a half.

Public school open enrollment application period is underway

Wisconsin’s public school open enrollment application period, which allows parents an opportunity to send their children to any public school district in the state, runs from Feb. 1 to April 29 for the 2016‑17 school year.

Traditionally, children in Wisconsin are assigned to public school districts based on the location of their parents’ home. Open enrollment is a tuition-free opportunity for parents to apply for their children to attend a public school in a school district other than the one in which they live.

The state’s open enrollment program is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and began in the 1998-99 school year with 2,464 students transferring from their home district to a nonresident district. The program has grown over the years with 53,188 students transferring during the 2014-15 school year.
