VA medical care now closer to home

Vietnam veteran Jim Hansel of Guttenberg is one of many area vets taking advantage of new medical programs offered locally by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Cornerstone Family Practice have recently been approved as providers of VA Choice and VA Blue Button, both programs designed to give veterans more convenient access to medical care.

Vickery joins Guttenberg as St. John's director of children, youth, and family ministry

On Sunday, Aug. 2, St. John’s Lutheran Church held an installation service for John Vickery, their new director of children, youth, and family ministries. Vickery is a native of Washington state with a background in music and youth ministry.

Vickery arrived in Guttenberg on Thursday, July 30, after making the four day journey from Washington in a moving truck with his car in tow. He sat down with The Press during his second day on the job.

Margaret A. Wille

Margaret Agnes Wille, 78, died Friday, July 31, 2015, at Manchester Regional Medical Center in Manchester.

Visitation was Tuesday, Aug. 4,  at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Wednesday, Aug. 5, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Dubuque, conducted by Rev. Steve Rosonke.

Interment was at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Guttenberg.

Doris L. Wessel

Doris Lorene (Hansen) Wessel, 90, passed away Aug. 4, 2015.

Visitation was Monday, Aug. 10, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home, Edgewood, and one hour before the services at the church on Tuesday.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Colesburg United Methodist Church in Colesburg, conducted by Pastor Joan Thomas.

Interment was at Zion Cemetery, Colesburg.

Kenneth W. Radamacker

Kenneth W. Radamacker, 93, of Des Plaines, Ill., died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2015, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Visitation was one hour before services at the funeral home.

Funeral services were Friday, Aug. 7, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Interment was at the Guttenberg City Cemetery.

Oil sheen near Guttenberg under investigation

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and two federal agencies are investigating the source of a sheen reported Tuesday afternoon, July 28, on the Mississippi River near Guttenberg.

DNR specialists and a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist spent three hours on the river Tuesday afternoon tracking the sheen up the main channel of the Mississippi. The U.S. Coast Guard is also looking for the pollution source.

The fair board has planned a busy schedule from the opening on Wednesday, Aug. 5, to the concluding livestock auction on Monday, Aug. 10.

Polls open for "Best of Guttenberg"

The second annual Best of Guttenberg competition is being held in conjunction with Celebrate the Mississippi River and Guttenberg, scheduled for Aug. 7-9. Community members will once again be able to vote for their favorite burger, pie, and Bloody Mary in Guttenberg. Organizers from the sponsoring organization, Guttenberg Development & Tourism, will award certificates – and bragging rights – to merchants who are voted “Best of Guttenberg.”

Researching river history California artist travels Mississippi in shantyboat

A rustic recreated 1940s shantyboat, a daring river voyage, and a meticulous archive of river stories: All are part of a multi-year art and history project, A Secret History of American River People, that brought Santa Cruz artist Wes Modes to Guttenberg in late July. Modes set sail on the Mississippi River to collect the stories of people who live and work on the river from the deck of his homemade houseboat.

Dwayne C. Mueller, 62, of Guttenberg died Saturday, July 25, 2015, at the Guttenberg Care Center, Guttenberg. 

Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial services were Saturday, Aug. 1, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Shane Anderson.
