After long days working as a mechanic at Brown’s Sales and Leasing during the 1980s and 90s, Harvey Torrey would return to his Guttenberg home to spend evenings in his basement, where he continued his work on cars. In uniform he may have been working on alternators and radiators, but in his basement he worked with cherry, maple, and walnut.

The Iowa Downtown Resource Center of Des Moines has released its report summarizing observations and recommendations for improving the city of Guttenberg. An assessment team of three downtown development professionals spent several days in the community during early December. The assessment visit and recommendations serve as a call to action and provide the community with current information for formulating strategies to address the serious issue of saving the downtown for future generations.

Clayton County residents will join Iowans across the state on Monday, Feb. 1, as the nation turns its attention to the results of the Iowa Presidential caucuses.

Voters from more than 1,700 voting precincts across the state will meet to select delegates to their respective county conventions. The 99 county conventions will then choose delegates for state party conventions, who in turn will subsequently head to the national conventions later this year.

An afternoon walk along the river on a cold January day took a dramatic turn for a Guttenberg woman when she heard cries for help and became part of a rescue effort that saved the life of a man who had fallen through the ice.

Toni Boardman was walking on the dike along Bussey Lake in north Guttenberg on Thursday, Jan. 21, when she heard cries for help. Looking toward the river, she saw a man up to his neck in the icy waters of the backwater lake, a popular spot for ice fishing.

Area nurses provide education and support for area survivors of sexual assault

Two area nurses are helping raise awareness about sexual assault in Clayton County. Jenny Snedden of New Vienna and Jen Radl of Guttenberg, both nurses at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, completed training as sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE) and have started a countywide sexual assault response team (SART) including nurses, advocates, the county attorney, and law enforcement.

Derek Allen Moser, Sr., 47, of Marshalltown, passed away suddenly on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at Central Iowa Health Center in Marshalltown.

Visitation was Friday, Jan. 22, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo.

Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 23, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Gary Hatcher.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

Visitation was Friday, Jan. 22, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 23, at the funeral home.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery, Garnavillo.

Lorita E. (Bailey) Hefel, 73 of Greeley, died Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation was Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth.

There will be no public services.

Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in North Buena Vista at a later date.

Steven Horman, a professional business consultant, specializing in one-on-one business counseling and long-range strategic planning for business, government and non-profit organizations, will be in Elkader to provide free and confidential one-on-one business counseling to existing business owners or to those wishing to start a business on Friday, Jan. 29, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Clayton County Economic Development Group office, 200 E. Bridge St., Elkader.

Registration is required for a one-hour free session. Contact Darla Kelchen at 563-245-2201 by Jan. 26.
