Couple discovers Guttenberg by boat, buys motel

The past six months have been a whirlwind for Patty and Dave Schwarz. On Oct. 26, they sold their Clinton moving company after 25 years in business. Two days later, they purchased the Guttenberg Motel. Both Patty and Dave were raised in Clinton and while it had always been their home, they were ready to make a change.

The highly anticipated opening of a new restaurant in Guttenberg is scheduled for Monday, May 2, when Sodes Green Acre Country Market and Café will begin offering a unique combination of locally produced goods from food and spirits to handmade gifts.

Burnell Martin Kahle, 69, of Manchester, passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.

Visitation was Sunday, April 17, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home, Manchester and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, April 18, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manchester.

Burial was at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Manchester.

Patrick R. Walters

Patrick “Pat” R. Walters, 66, of Eau Claire, Wis. and formerly of Clearwater, Minn., died, Thursday, April 14, 2016, at The Classic at Hillcrest Greens Memory Care in Altoona, Wis.

A Memorial Service will take place at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 23, at Colfax Lutheran Church in Colfax, conducted by Pastor Leslie Walck. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at the church. Military Honors will be accorded following the service by American Legion Post 131 of Colfax at the church.

Sampson Funeral Home of Colfax is serving the family.

Seanalee LaVonne "Gilligan" Bailey, 21, of Arlington, and formerly of Millville, died Sunday, April 10, 2016, as the result of a motor vehicle accident on Highway 52 near Millville.

Visitation was Saturday, April 16, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville and one hour before services at the funeral home.

Funeral services were Sunday, April 17, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, conducted by Pastor Arnold Flater of New Hope Lutheran Church in Farley.

Roy E. Johnston Jr., 89, of Oelwein, died Monday, April 11, 2016, at his home.

Visitation was Thursday, April 14, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein.

Funeral services were Friday, April 15, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein, conducted by Rev. Paul C. McManus and Deacon Jim Patera.

Gloria L. Dettmann

Gloria Lavonne Dettmann, 91, of Garnavillo, passed away April 9, 2016, at the Guttenberg Care Center after a long illness.

Visitation was held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on April 15, with the funeral service following, conducted by Pastor Gary Hatcher.

Burial was at the Garnavillo Cemetery.

Gloria was born in Highland Township in Elkader to Russell Livingston and Vergie (Wilson) Livingston on Sept. 20, 1925.

School board restructures campuses; early-outs moved to Fridays

Following an April 14 work session to hear facility assessment costs from ICAT (Iowa Construction Advocacy Team) and Estes Construction, the Clayton Ridge School Board of Directors opened a public budget hearing and school calendar hearing. 

Business manager Dave Schlueter presented the proposed 2016-17 certified district budget with total expenditures of $11,371,447. Tax rates were as follows: general fund - $3,006,949, management fund - $125,000, voted physical plant and equipment - $212,095, and regular physical plant and equipment - $104,465.  The total taxable valuation is $305,271,721 and the tax levy rate is $11.22/per $1,000 taxable valuation.
