Parilee (Esser) McGeough

Parilee (Esser) McGeough, 77, of Las Vegas, Nev., died Sept. 17, 2016, after a short illness.

Services will be held Oct. 25, 2016, at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, Nev.

Parilee was born June 21, 1939, in Glen Haven, Wis., to Jerome and Thelma Esser. She graduated  from Guttenberg High School in 1958. On June 9, 1959, she married John McGeough at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guttenberg. She worked at Doug's Steak House and Esser's Clothing in Guttenberg, and retired in 1992 from Central Phone Company in Las Vegas, Nev.

Bernice L. Moser, 83, of Guttenberg, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation was Thursday, Oct. 13, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 14, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Shane Anderson.

Interment was at Guttenberg City Cemetery.

Anita Rose Schmelzer, 89, of Garnavillo, died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Visitation was Sunday, Oct. 9, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 10, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Richard G. Gaul.

Interment was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo.

Carol Martha Schlueter, 73, of Millville, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 10, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Betty Lou Geick, 84, of Guttenberg, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Visitation was Monday, Oct. 3, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Memorial services were Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, conducted by Carl Borrett.

Betty was born on Jan. 10, 1932, in Luana, the daughter of Louis and Roma (Bittner) Heins.

Ghouls' and Goblins' Night Out

Each October, Guttenberg merchants get into the Halloween spirit with Ghouls' and Goblins' Night Out. The sixth annual event, scheduled for 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, gives adults the opportunity to celebrate Halloween and support Guttenberg businesses.

City council moves forward on bridge, cat licenses, camera system

The Guttenberg city council, meeting in regular session on Oct. 3, moved forward on the Garber Road bridge replacement project,  accepted a bid for a new camera system and instructed the city attorney to draw up an ordinance providing for the licensing of cats. 

Mayor Russ Loven led councilmembers Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Jane Parker, Virginia Saeugling, and Steve Friedlein through the agenda. Also at the council table were Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume and City Attorney Michael Schuster.

Exchange student shares study abroad experience

German exchange student Lena Thurich is two months into her 10-month stay in the U.S., attending high school at Clayton Ridge and living with host parents Carolyn and Neil Hofer. The 15-year-old has joined the cross country team and is enjoying her new family. “My exchange organization YFU focuses on finding a host family for you that fits to you no matter where the family lives. And they made their job good, because my host family fits perfect to me!” Thurich told The Press. She’s looking forward to a family trip to San Francisco, Calif., and traveling throughout New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. with other exchange students before heading back to Hamburg.

Leap into reading — 1,000 Books before Kindergarten

Families are invited to join the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program at the Guttenberg Public Library. The  program is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children. By reading just one book a night, families can reach the 1,000-book goal in three years and provide their children essential early literacy skills.
