Mae E. Hook

Mae E. Hook, 100, of Manchester, formerly of Colesburg, completed her journey on earth on Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester.

Graveside memorial services will be at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 19, at Elk Valley Cemetery, rural Elk Creek, conducted by Pastor Joan Thomas of the Colesburg United Methodist Church.

A luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall of the Colesburg United Methodist Church immediately following the committal service.

Mark E. Brady

Mark Edward Brady, 55, of Guttenberg, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Visitation was Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Services will be at a later date.

Mark was born on June 6, 1961, in Manchester, the son of Cecil and Grace (Kelley) Brady.

Clayton County election results

A high voter turn-out in Clayton County saw more than 9,000 voters cast their ballots in the Nov. 8 general election to choose county, state and national leaders.

In the presidential race, Clayton County favored Donald Trump  with 5,309 votes over Hillary Clinton with 3,236. The Libertarian ticket tallied 384 votes, with a scattering  for eight other parties on the ballot.

City council hears hospital update, moves forward on cat licensing

The Guttenberg city council, meeting in regular session on Nov. 7, heard an update from a Guttenberg Municipal Hospital board member, moved forward on cat licensing, and hired an architectural firm to look at the condition of the municipal building. 

Mayor Russ Loven led councilmembers Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Jane Parker, Virginia Saeugling, and Steve Friedlein through the agenda. Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume was also present.

While unrest continued across the country following the 2016 presidential election, students and community members of varying beliefs gathered in the Clayton Ridge school gymnasium to celebrate and honor veterans of the United States military. People stood as one, the band played as one, and hands found hearts while flags passed.

Guttenberg residents have watched with excitement as the former site of Guttenberg Industries has been transformed into a new gas station and convenience store over the past several months. Kwik Star will hold its grand opening in Guttenberg on Thursday, Nov. 17, after officially opening on Nov. 10. An open house on Nov. 17 will begin at 9 a.m., with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. and the presentation of donations to at least two local organizations. The store will offer three weeks of grand opening specials, including free coffee, discounts on hot food and other commodities.

Karen B. Ullerich

Karen Bernice Ullerich, 83, of Guttenberg, died Friday, Nov. 4, 2016, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Visitation was Sunday, Nov. 6, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Private family services will be at a later date. 

Karen was born on Jan. 21, 1933, in rural Dorchester, the daughter of Henry and Marguerite (Blake) Larson Sr.

Craig R. "Lucky" Mueller

He gained his nickname through his friends who said, "He brought luck to them to have him around."

Craig was born Dec. 29, 1947, in McGregor. He grew up in Garnavillo and graduated from Garnavillo High School. He was active in sports, lettering in basketball and baseball. He belonged to FFA, showing alongside his brothers with his Brown Swiss cattle and winning many ribbons and bells. He was raised and worked hard alongside his brothers and sisters on the family dairy farm. After high school he attended Upper Iowa.

Local veterans honored in D.C.

Garnavillo veteran Glenn Berns, 75, and Guttenberg veteran Floyd Westhoff, 82, traveled to Washington, D.C. on Oct. 18 as members of the Honor Flight. The nonprofit, which has 127 hubs in 41 states, is dedicated to providing veterans with honor and closure by allowing them to visit, for free, their memorials in Washington, D.C.
