Award-winning routines slated

The Clayton Ridge Drill Team will showcase its two champion state routines at the halftime of the varsity boys home basketball games on Friday, Jan. 15. 

The Jan. 15 presentation is the second of two that were scheduled this month; the first was held Jan. 5. The team earned state champion titles in Small School Prop and Small School Military, as well as the Judges Choice Award for its prop routine at state competition in December.

New parking in downtown Guttenberg

Public parking will soon be available in a new lot located at 431 S. River Park Drive, just outside the doorway of the Dam Bar in Guttenberg. 

The lot, which is owned by the city, will add 12-17 new parking spaces for Dam Bar customers and anyone visiting Guttenberg's downtown businesses.

Virgil Niehaus

Virgil Havill William Niehaus, 94, of Guttenberg, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Visitation was before services at St. John’s Lutheran Church,  Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 28, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Shane Anderson.

Interment was at Guttenberg City Cemetery, Guttenberg.

Toni K. Schuster

Once upon a time, on Feb. 2, 1945, a beautiful baby girl was brought into this world. Her parents named her Toni Kay and she grew up to be one of the most loving, generous, kindhearted and memorable people to grace this earth. Toni was the only woman with the ability to be 29 years of age for more than 40 years!

The grade transcript deadline for receiving Dollars for Scholars scholarship money is Jan. 7, 2016.

The letters should include a grade transcript and a completed recipient form. The recipient form (CR Dollars for Scholars Recipient Form) can be found at http://www.claytonridge.dollarsforscholars.org under the Students and Parents link.

New garbage contractor for city residential customers

Effective Jan. 1, Guttenberg residents will see a change in the company that the city contracts to haul garbage. Kluesner Sanitation of Farley will begin collection residential waste, succeeding Waste Management of Prairie du Chien, Wis. 

The city council awarded the contract to Kluesner's in November after reviewing bids from other services, including the city's longtime waste hauler, Waste Management. In December, the city council lowered residential garbage rates by $1 a month, effective Jan. 1.
