New bank gives back in Guttenberg

Community Savings Bank merged with The Garnavillo Savings Bank in September of 2015, and this spring opened a new location on Highway 52 in Guttenberg. “We have customers stopping in every day. The word is out in Guttenberg that Community Savings Bank has opened a new office,” said Chad Kreel, vice president of marketing for Community Savings Bank. “Since our opening on April 15, we have helped many customers; some looking for loans or others looking for checking account options.”

Say No For Now meeting draws crowd in Garnavillo

The topic of frac sand mining in Clayton County drew yet another impassioned crowd for a June 6 meeting of the Say No For Now group at the Garnavillo Community Center. About 50 people, some from within Clayton County and some from other areas, heard from group leaders and shared their own opinions.

Jeffery A. Werger

Jeffery Alan Werger, 39, of Garnavillo, died Sunday, June 5, 2016, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital due to injuries sustained in an accident.

Visitation was Wednesday, June 8, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo, and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Thursday, June 9, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Interment was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo.

Eldon J. Kerkhoff

Eldon John Kerkhoff, 99, of Guttenberg, formerly of Dyersville, died Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Guttenberg Care Center, Guttenberg.

Visitation was Thursday, June 9, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville.  

Funeral services were Thursday, June 9, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, conducted by Rev. Dennis Quint.

Burial was in the SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Petersburg.

Train fatality

On June 4 at 11:57 p.m., Clayton County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with Garnavillo Fire, EMS and the Guttenberg Ambulance, responded to South Front Street near Bill’s Boat Landing in Clayton for a pedestrian who was struck by a train. Jeffery Werger, 39, of Garnavillo was struck by a Canadian Pacific train traveling south. He was transported to the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The incident remains under investigation by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office.

The Clayton County dairy banquet was held at Johnson’s Reception Hall in Elkader on Friday evening June 3.  A meal was served from 6:30-8:30 p.m., followed by a program that featured the presentation of awards and the naming of the 2015-2016 Clayton County dairy royalty.

Seitz family opens storage facility in Industrial Park

In 2012, Scott Seitz and his wife, Deb, purchased a home on Abel Island with the intention of retiring to the leisurely, tranquil isle in the years to come. Four years later, they find themselves opening a family business.

Donald L. Grant

Donald Lawrence Grant, 81, passed away on May 27, 2016, at his home in Sun City, Ariz.

A Catholic Mass will be held on Thursday, June 16, at St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, Sun City, Ariz.

He will receive full military honors and burial will be at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix, Ariz.
