Train derailment near Clayton

A rock slide north of Clayton on Saturday morning, July 23,  caused the derailment of a Canadian Pacific train when the engineer was unable to stop in time before hitting the debris.

The lead locomotive and 12 empty cars left the tracks. There were no injuries, and no liquids or hazardous materials were in the cars that derailed.

CP crews were dispatched to the scene and worked throughout the rest of the day and night to open the tracks. Trains were back in operation by Sunday morning.

Council accepts Willett's resignation

The Guttenberg city council accepted the resignation of City Manager Mary Willett at a special meeting held Monday, July 18. 

The unanimous vote came after Mayor Russ Loven noted that discussion on the status of her employment has been ongoing and that he was ready to recommend that the council accept her resignation.

Nearly 500 votes flooded in for this year’s summer sculpture project hosted by Umbrella Arts, an initiative of Guttenberg Gallery and Creativity Center. The group held its third annual event this summer, and it proved to be the most successful one yet.

A small group gathered at the Clayton County office building in Elkader for what was the final meeting of the mine reserve expansion study committee on July 21. All five committee members were present: Jack Knight, Tom Blake, Anne Osmundson, Mike Finnegan, and Roy Blair.

Ronald Meyer

Ronald Meyer, 82, of Osterdock, died Thursday, July 14, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Visitation was Sunday, July 17, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, July 18, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Gary Hatcher.

Interment was at Bethel Cemetery, Osterdock.

City manager's employment unresolved after July 11 meeting

The issue of City Manager Mary Willett's employment remained unresolved following a closed session at the regular monthly Guttenberg city council meeting on Monday, July 11.

Her employment has been discussed at two council meetings in June, and in both instances the council went into closed session. On June 27, the council voted 3-2 against offering her a 3-month extension of her employment agreement.

Holocaust trip being planned for local high school students

Berlin, Warsaw, Krakow, Prague, Nuremberg, Munich and Salzburg: These are the stops planned for a 2017 Holocaust trip now accepting reservations from Clayton Ridge High School students and their parents.

Louis Cook, instructor of American history, U.S. government, economics, and current events, is co-hosting the trip with American lit and freshman English instructor Valeria White and her husband, Dan.

John L. Kruse, 62, of Garber, died Wednesday, June 29, 2016. 

Visitation was before services at the church.

Funeral services were Friday, July 8, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Penny Hansel.

Interment will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.

Robert Koebel Liechty, 95, of Guttenberg, died Saturday, July 2, 2016, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 14, at the funeral home, conducted by Rev. Penny Hansel.

Interment will be at Guttenberg City Cemetery, Guttenberg.
