PPEL vote to be held Feb. 7, final public meeting Feb. 2

Superintendent Shane Wahls answered some tough questions during a series of public meetings about the Feb. 7 PPEL (physical plant and equipment levy) vote, which if approved would provide the Clayton Ridge School District with an additional of $2.5 million over the next ten years earmarked specifically for building maintenance.

School election is Tuesday, Feb. 7

Voters in the Clayton Ridge Community School District will go to the polls on Tuesday, Feb. 7, to vote on a public measure that would provide for a tax levy for physical plant and equipment purposes. Voters will be asked to authorize a 10-year levy representing an increase of 67¢ over the current PPEL.

Polling hours will be from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the following sites:

Luella Krapfl

Luella Krapfl, 86, of Dubuque, passed away Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

Visitation was Friday, Jan. 20, at Church of the Resurrection, Dubuque.

Funeral services were Saturday, Jan, 21 at the church.

Burial was at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque.

Ardeth M. Kirschbaum, 87, of Dubuque passed from her earthly home into God’s eternal home on Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, at Luther Manor, surrounded by her children.

Visitation was Friday, Jan. 20, at the Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, Dubuque and before services at the church.

Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 21, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Dubuque.

Thor Fisko Jr.

Thor Fisko Jr., 91, of Elkader, moved on from this life on Sunday Jan. 15, 2017.

Thor was born Sept. 10, 1925, in Garber as the second of two children to Thor and Ruth (Wathen) Fisko. Following an active childhood as the ever-irritating younger brother to his sister Helen, Thor enlisted in the Army. He arrived in Europe on Aug. 11, 1944, exactly 33 years, to the day, that his father, Thor Fisko Sr., arrived in the United States from Norway. He worked as a Field Lineman in Northern France and Central Europe during the war.

The Clayton Ridge School Board of Directors met in regular session on Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. Members in attendance were John Heying, Michael Finnegan, Alicia Helle, Ellen Johnson and Jason Reimer. Christine Aulwes and Kathy Ihde were absent.

Guttenberg hospital introduces Rahma, the surgical robot

There’s a capable new set of hands at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, and they’re powered by a surgical robot named Rahma. Bill Robinson, branch manager at Community Savings Bank in Garnavillo, was the first to go under the robot’s knife at GMH. The procedure, done by Dr. Daniel Mansfield, would involve just three small incisions and would allow the surgeon to repair the hernia with more precision and less postoperative pain.

Council hears pool update

The Guttenberg city council, meeting in special session for a budget workshop on Jan. 16, heard an update from the Guttenberg pool committee.

Jesssica Cline first presented an overview of the pool's history and the committee's work with its consultant, Burbach Aquatics, Inc.

Committee member MJ Smith then presented details on the committee's plan for a pool and pool house, and received unanimous council approval for the following seven committee recommendations:

Aulwes on award-winning Rose Parade team

The 103rd Rose Bowl was played as usual in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 2, but it wasn’t business as usual for Guttenberg resident Sue Aulwes. While football teams prepared for plays on the field, she worked with a crew of volunteers behind the scenes to prepare a float for the 128th Rose Parade. She began work on Dec. 29, and worked until the wee hours of the morning on Jan. 1, putting in approximately 60 hours in four days.

Guttenberg hospital audit report

The accounting firm of Seim Johnson, LLP released an audit report for Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in September. 

The hospital's operating revenue totaled $15,324,121 for the year ended June 30, 2016, a 13% increase from the prior year. Total operating revenue included $14,491,689 in net patient service revenue, $835,293 in other operating revenue, and a $2,861 loss on disposal of capital assets.
