Alumni encouraged to reflect on swimming pool days

Former lifeguard and Guttenberg High School graduate Amy (Eglseder) Clefisch is leading alumni efforts for the Wave of the Future. From its opening in 1970 to 2016, the Guttenberg Swimming Pool has employed 94 youth in its basket room, concession stand and guard chairs.

LaVerne L. Troester

LaVerne L. Troester (Mrs. Oscar Troester), 93, of Garnavillo, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017, at the Elkader Care Center.

Funeral services were Friday, Sept. 29, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Gary Hatcher. Visitation was before services at the church.

Burial was at Garnavillo Cemetery, Garnavillo.

Stanley J. McLane, 87, of Dyersville passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation was Thursday, Sept. 28, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville.

Autumn Chill offers chili, music

Umbrella Arts is sponsoring a new event known as Autumn Chill on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 3-6 p.m. at River Park Place Courtyard in Guttenberg. Live music and a chili buffet will be the focal points of the event, with proceeds benefitting the local food bank and the Wave of the Future campaign.

Members of the Wave of the Future campaign committee for the Guttenberg swimming pool gathered at city hall on Thursday, Sept. 21. Two new donors announced their contributions to the campaign, and teams reported on their activities since the last meeting.

Marlys D. Friedlein

Marlys Deanna (Rodenberg) Friedlein of Guttenberg received her wings at the age of 75 on Sept. 13, 2017. 

Visitation was Sunday, Sept. 17, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral service were Monday, Sept. 18, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Shane Anderson.

Interment was at Ceres Cemetery, Guttenberg.

Council welcomes new city manager

Guttenberg's new city manager, Denise Schneider, attended her first monthly council meeting on Sept. 11 following her tentative hiring last month. As the first order of business, the council officially approved the terms of her contract at Monday night's meeting.

Mayor Russ Loven opened the meeting with a moment of silence in remembrance of 9/11 victims and also for victims of recent hurricanes and disasters.

School board election results

Voters in the Clayton Ridge Community School District on Sept. 12 elected incumbent candidates Michael W. Finnegan and Kathy Ihde to the school board. Unofficial totals were Ihde with 231 and Finnegan with 209 votes. A third vacancy on the board with no declared candidates saw incumbent Jason Reimer garnering the most write-in votes with 110.

Other undeclared candidates and their write-in vote tallies included Sharon Cunningham 85, Jeff Hoeger 40, Roger Balk 38, and Tracy Werges 17.
