Opal Eilene Dean

Eilene Dean, 92, of Fort Dodge, passed away Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, at the Simpson Health Center, Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge.

Visitation was Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Gunderson Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Fort Dodge.

Funeral services were Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. Bethany Willers.

Burial was in North Lawn Cemetery.

Housing assessment presented

A countywide housing needs assessment began in March as a partnership between UERPC, Workforce Housing Needs Program, Iowa Area Development Group, CCDG and Alliant Energy, Black Hills, and Alpine Communications. The results of that assessment were presented, specific to Guttenberg, by Sara Neuzil, a representative of the Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission (UERPC), Darla Kelchen of CCDG, and Susan Kozner of the Iowa Development Group, during an open house on Tuesday evening, Dec. 13.

The City of Guttenberg has been without a city manager since July, when the council accepted the resignation of former city manager Mary Willett. In the months since, Mayor Russ Loven, Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume, and other city staff have stepped up to keep operations running smoothly.

Guttenberg lighting contest winners

Judging for the Christmas lighting contest sponsored by the City of Guttenberg and the Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce took place the evening of Thursday, Dec. 15. Winners are as follows. Prizes will be in the form of credits on city utility bills.

Municipal building photos sought

The City of Guttenberg is working with an architectural firm to study the municipal building and prepare a condition report identifying areas that need attention, estimated repair costs and prioritize the repairs needed. 

The firm is looking for historic photos of the building to help with their study, both interior and exterior shots.  If anyone has a photo they are willing to share, stop by the city office, and the staff will make a copy of it while you wait. Those with questions can call the city office at 252-1161.

Lengthy agenda for Guttenberg city council

A budget amendment, cat licensing, and garbage rate increases were among the items occupying city council attention at the regular monthly meeting on Monday, Dec. 5. Mayor Russ Loven presided with councilmembers Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Virginia Saeugling, Jane Parker and Steve Friedlein on hand. Also at the council table were City Attorney Michael Schuster and Administrative Assistant Deb Eulberg in the absence of Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume.

Voters reject tax levy increase proposed by Clayton Ridge School

In a special election held Dec. 6, voters in the Clayton Ridge Community School  district rejected a Physical Plant and Equipment property tax levy that would have funded improvements at both the Guttenberg and Garnavillo campuses.

The failed proposition would have provided for an increase of $.67 per $1,000 of taxable valuation.

Guttenberg ballerina to perform in The Nutcracker

“Professionals are good, not because they don’t make mistakes, but because they don’t make the same mistake twice.” Chianne Behrend remembers these words, once stated by her dance instructor. Behrend, a sophomore at Clayton Ridge High School, has been practicing ballet in Dubuque at The Grand Opera House for over a decade. This Christmas will mark her sixth performance in The Nutcracker, put on every year at the Grand Opera House.

Richard R. Geuder

Richard Robert Geuder died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, at Boulder City Hospital, Boulder City, Nev.

In spring 2017, internment will be in the Guttenberg City Cemetery. Pastor Shane Anderson will officiate and military honors will be presented by the Guttenberg American Legion.

Richard was born the son of Ernst and Flonda (Hedemann) Geuder, July 31, 1930, in Guttenberg. Richard was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. He received his education in the Guttenberg Community School, graduating from high school in 1948.
