First energy district breakfast held in Guttenberg

In 2013, the annual expense for electrical usage on Guttenberg city streetlights and major security lights was around $13,000. The City of Guttenberg began updating all fixtures, sensors and bulbs that year with more energy efficient models, leading the way in Clayton County. “At last fiscal year, the expense was $4,060 – a savings of 68 percent,” reported Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume at the first quarterly breakfast of the Clayton County Energy District in Guttenberg on Friday, June 23.

Earl "Butch" Meyer

Earl William “Butch” Meyer, 79, passed away on Monday, June 26 at the University of Iowa Hospital following a brief illness. He left this world surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren.

According to his wishes, there will be no visitation. Private gravesite services were held by the family at the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Earl was born on Dec. 1, 1937, the son of Earl and Lillian (Duehr) Meyer. In his youth he especially enjoyed rabbit hunting with his dad and time spent with his grandfather, William.

Combat Veterans 4th Annual Benefit Ride/Cruise July 7 & 8

Registration for the 4th Annual Combat Veterans Ride/Cruise, sponsored by Eastern Iowa Chapter 39-3, will be 5-9 p.m. Friday, July 7, for the 11 a.m. pre-ride and 7-10:45 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at the Elkport Campground for the ride/cruise. 

One donation of $15 per bike/car gets you everything both days, including food. The ride, open to motorcycles, cars and trucks, will make stops in Wadena, Monona, Guttenberg, and Colesburg.

The River of Music concert in Guttenberg this Friday, June 30, will include a short celebration of Ingleside Club’s 115 years.    

The club was established in 1902, when eight Guttenberg women decided to beautify the riverfront by turning a cow pasture into Ingleside Park.

The iconic summer Stars and Stripes Celebration, hosted by the Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled to take place this Saturday, kicking off with the Farmer’s Market at 8 a.m. on the 400 block of South River Park Drive, and ending in the timeless custom of fireworks over the Mississippi River. The third annual Interact 5K Walk/Run will also be held that morning at 8 a.m., with registration beginning at 7 a.m. at the gazebo in Ingleside Park.

The Stars and Stripes committee has chosen to honor Charles and Joanne Finch as the Super Seniors for this year’s celebration on July 1. “The Finches are hard working, model community members,” said Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce Director Emily Sadewasser. “Their contributions to local business and culture over their shared lives are immeasurable.”

Roger F. Hefel

Roger “Rog” F. Hefel, 66, of North Buena Vista, passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He lived with Parkinson’s for 15 years and never complained.

Visitation was Friday, June 23, at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, Dubuque and one hour before services at the church hall.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 24, at Immaculate Conception Church in North Buena Vista, conducted by Fr. Marvin Bries.

Linda Williams, 75, died Monday, June 19, 2017, at her home in Bella Vista, Ark.

Evelyn F. Linderbaum

Evelyn F. Linderbaum, 96, of Monona, died Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at the Guttenberg Care Center, Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 24, at St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, conducted by Rev. Harold McMillin. Visitation was before services at the church.

Burial was at Monona Cemetery, Monona.

Arrangements were handled by Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona.

Pamela J. Tuecke

Pamela "Pam" Jean Handke Tuecke, 60, of Dubuque, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at UnityPoint-Finley Hospital on Friday, June 23, 2017.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 28, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home of Guttenberg. A prayer service will take place at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pam was born on Nov. 29, 1956, in Dubuque.
