Troesters to be honored during July 14 Relay for Life

Guttenberg residents Fran and Al Troester have been chosen as the honorary survivors and caregivers for the the annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Clayton County to be held July 14 at the Clayton County Fairgrounds in National.

Violent intruder drill helps prepare for the worst

Barricading doors and applying tourniquets isn’t your typical middle school classroom lesson, but for Clayton Ridge students, it’s become second nature. During a violent intruder drill on Saturday, July 8, 50 students and teachers participated in an exercise that could potentially save their lives and the lives of others in an active shooter situation.

Janis K. Cook

Janis Kay Cook, 71, of Guttenberg, died Monday, July 3, 2017, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor.

Funeral services were Saturday, July 8, in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, conducted by Rev. Derek Sellars. Visitation was before services at the funeral chapel.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, near Leighton.

Jane Lechner

Jane Lechner, 83, of Guttenberg, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital on Monday, July 3, 2017.

Visitation was Friday, July 7, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Saturday, July 8, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Shane Anderson.

Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello.

Robert J. Hoffman

Robert John Hoffman, 63, died on July 2, 2017, at his home in Guttenberg.

A private celebration of life is planned for a later date.

Mildred C. Schutte

Mildred Catherine (Barrier) Solomon Schutte died peacefully on June 22, 2017, in American Fork, Utah. Affectionately known as Millie, she was born in the Council Bluffs area on Oct. 28, 1931, having two brothers, Darrel (Georgine) Barrier and Arlen (Joyce) Barrier.

Millie married John Solomon and they had three children, Steve (Cindy) Solomon, Sheril Rawle, and Dan Solomon. Preceded in death by her husband, John, she later married Jim Schutte. She has four grandchildren, Andi (Justin) Lym, Luke Lym, Eric (Vanessa) Solomon, and Audra (Steve) Simons; and six great-grandchildren, Kanyon, Blayke, Bristol, and Jennalee Lym, and Tyler and Ethan Simons.

Jeffrey A. Swisher

Happy 60th Birthday in Heaven. Jeffrey Allen Swisher of Wheaton, Ill., formerly of Garnavillo, passed from this life to his heavenly home on Feb. 3, 2017, at Central DuPage Hospital, Winfield, Ill., after a courageous battle with cancer. His family was by his side. 

To honor Jeff’s life, memorial services were held at Christ Community Church, Geneva, Ill., on Feb. 11, conducted by his longtime friend and pastor, Mike Hurn. Funeral services were also held Feb. 19, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

New concession stand dedication set for July 11, 6 p.m. at Vet's Field

Turkey and dressing sandwiches... I know, it makes my mouth water just thinking about them, too. On numerous occasions my grandma, Betty Schmitt, whipped up a roaster or two of turkey and dressing sandwiches and donated it to a youth or adult baseball/softball tournament held at one of the ball fields in Guttenberg.

Last week, after nine months of research and discussion, the Strategic Partnerships Task Force presented its recommendation to the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital board and city council on June 29. About 20 additional hospital staff and community members waited anxiously for the task force to begin their presentation.

Supervisors discuss security at courthouse

Clayton County Sheriff Mike Tschirgi and Deputy Dave Tschantz met with the Clayton County Board of Supervisors June 26 to discuss security at the Clayton County Courthouse.  

Sheriff Tschirgi showed the supervisors a supervisory order from the Iowa Supreme Court that establishes a statewide weapons policy concerning the carrying of weapons in the Courthouse.
