Plans shared for school design

Superintendent Shane Wahls presented an update on school facility projects to parents and students in both Guttenberg and Garnavillo on Tuesday, Aug. 22, in preparation for the start of the new school year. Voters approved an increase in the PPEL levy in February, but because the school district opted to lower levy amounts for its management and cash reserve funds, the tax actually decreased by one-third of a cent to $10.92.

Sheriff's Office plans Labor Day traffic enforcement program

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau’s sTEP (Special Traffic Enforcement Program) project for this upcoming Labor Day weekend. 

Sheriff Michael Tschirgi would like to remind everyone to drive safely and be responsible this upcoming Labor Day weekend.

Kimberly K. Althoff

Kimberly Kay (Johnson) Althoff of Dyersville changed her address to Heaven on Aug. 26, 2017. She died peacefully at Mayo Clinic, St. Mary’s Hospital, in Rochester, Minn., with her loving family around her. She was 50 years old and was very bravely fighting her second bout with cancer, with other medical complications.

Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 30, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville. Visitation will continue Thursday from 9 – 10 a.m. at the funeral home prior to services.

Norbert Dettman

Norbert Dettman, 95, of Luana died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017 at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon.

Funeral services were Monday Aug. 21, at St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, conducted by Rev. Harold McMillin. Visitation was before services at the church.

Burial was at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Luana.

Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

St. Mary's Fall Festival dinner, raffles, fun

St. Mary's Fall Festival will be held Sunday, Sept. 10, in Guttenberg. A self-serve broasted chicken and ham dinner will be served starting at 10:15 a.m. The festival features St. Mary's adult choir singing at 10 a.m. mass, a country store, live local bands throughout the day, a large silent auction, a raffle for a live steer, a kayak, bicycles and more, a sanctioned kiddie tractor pull, an obstacle course, a toddler bounce house and a petting zoo.

St. Mary's Fall Festival will be held rain or shine.

Guttenberg Industries donates to Wave of the Future

When the Guttenberg Municipal Swimming Pool was built in 1974, another development was also taking place – the Ertl family was opening Guttenberg Industries. Having supported the local economy for the past four decades, the Ertl family and their company are going the extra lap for the Wave of the Future. They recently announced a $50,000 donation to the campaign for a new swimming pool in Guttenberg.

Two candidates have filed for three open seats on the Clayton Ridge School board of directors.Incumbents Mike Finnegan and Kathy Ihde are seeking re-election. The third seat, currently held by Jason Reimer, can be filled by voter write-in. 

Rural Guttenberg resident Michael Finnegan is up for re-election to the school board on Tuesday, Sept. 12. He has served two four-year terms for the Clayton Ridge School board of directors, and says the experience has been a fulfilling one.

Verna Mae Steffen, 92, of Luxemburg, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, at Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg.

Visitation was Friday, Aug. 11, at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville and before services at the funeral home.

Larry LaVern Purman, 72, of Elkader, died suddenly Sunday, July 23, 2017, at home in Elkader.

Funeral services were Thursday, July 27, at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport, conducted by Rev. Margret Yackel-Juleen. Visitation was before services at the church.

Inurnment was at Hansel Cemetery, Garber.
