Lois Mildred Morarend, 84, of Edgewood, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 15, from 3-7 p.m., at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point, and one hour before services at the church on Saturday. 

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16, at Hope Lutheran Church in Littleport, conducted by Pastor Margaret Yackel-Juleen.

Visitation was Thursday, Dec. 7, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Memorial services were Friday, Dec. 8, at the funeral home, conducted by Rev. Harold McMillin.

Inurnment was at Mt. Harmony Cemetery, Elkport.

Donald Clarence Geuder, 89, of Guttenberg, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Visitation was Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Graveside services were Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Guttenberg City Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Penny Hansel.

Clayton Ridge Area Dollars for Scholars reminds scholarship recipients that the grade transcript deadline for receiving scholarship money for the fall term is Jan. 2, 2018.

The letters should include a grade transcript and a completed recipient form. The recipient form (CR Dollars for Scholars Recipient Form) can be found at http://www.claytonridge.dollarsforscholars.org under the Students and Parents link.

City council sets date for bond vote

The Guttenberg city council at its regular monthly meeting on Dec. 4 heard an update on the Wave of the Future swimming pool campaign and set March 6 as the date of a bond election to help finance pool construction.

Mayor Russ Loven and Mayor Pro-Tem Steve Friedlein were on hand for the last monthly meeting of their terms, joining councilmembers Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Virginia Saeugling and Jane Parker; City Manager Denise Schneider, and City Attorney Michael Schuster.

Repair work begins at Lock 10

When a barge struck the wall just inside Lock 10 this summer, just as many others have over the past eight decades, the aging steel and concrete gave way and a very large piece broke free. There were no injuries and no harm was done to the commercial vessel, but repairs are now underway to fix the damage.

Council approves March bond vote for $2.8 million

More than 30 people gathered at the Monday, Dec. 4, meeting of the Guttenberg city council. Dr. Robert Merrick and Dr. Jim Osterhaus, co-chairs of the Wave of the Future campaign, presented the council with an update on the project and recommended that the council approve a resolution calling for a bond vote of up to $2.8 million to help fund the new pool and bathhouse.

Guttenberg native Brian Spielbauer to speak and sign books here Dec. 4

Guttenberg native Brian Spielbauer has published his first book in a series of fantasy novels. The publication Tales of Lemuria: The Demon's Chamber debuted Sept. 1 of this year.

Monday, Dec. 4, will be a busy day for Brian. He will be in Guttenberg to speak with students at St. Mary's/IC School in the morning, and then will travel to Beckman High School in Dyersville in the late afternoon.

Local dairy farmers Darlene Kregel, Megan Kregel and Maureen (Kregel) Seevers are among the female farmers featured in the new book Women and the Land, released this fall by authors Barb Hall and Kathryn Gamble. The book takes a look at more than 25 women who are impacting Iowa’s farmland. Some have inherited rural property and are managing the agriculture practices from afar; some are working the land directly, providing food to the heartland; and still others are working in tandem with their husbands, fathers, sisters and daughters.

$230,000 in donations announced at Backwater 'pool party'

Thanksgiving weekend was a busy one in Guttenberg, with families gathering to celebrate the holiday, shoppers visiting local merchants, and a large event on Saturday evening at Lakeside Ballroom. Lakeside owners donated the hall for a ‘pool party,’ hosted by the band Backwater and their wives, to benefit the Wave of the Future campaign for a new swimming pool in Guttenberg. The event raised nearly $30,000.
