Marquette Road reconstruction, from Mooney to La Pointe, set for 2017

Engineers presented the proposed 2017 Marquette Road project to a room of about 25 local citizens, mostly business owners, on Tuesday night at Prairie du Chien City Hall. The reconstruction will occur between La Pointe and Mooney Streets and consist of turning the existing four-lane undivided highway into a modified three-lane roadway with a two-way, left-turn lane and widened shoulders.

The project is provisionally scheduled to begin around April 2017 and last most of the construction season, likely through October. Plans are not yet finalized, and won’t be until August of 2016. Real estate acquisitions, which include four minor pieces of right-of-way, are the next phase for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. According to Heidi Schwarz, project engineer from Knight Engineers and Architects, of La Crosse, no businesses will close as a result of the acquisitions, though some signs may be moved.

Prairie du Chien hosted their first gymnastics meet of the season Monday night in the Bluff View gym.

Prairie du Chien had a team score of 78.075. Platteville/Belmont/Lancaster scored 125.75.

Roberta M. Marfilius, 79, of Prairie du Chien passed away Monday, Jan. 12, at the Crossing Rivers Hospital.

She was born July 15, 1935 in Prairie du Chien the daughter of Robert and Carmen (Campbell) Gillitzer. She married Lyle Marfilius on May 5, 1954 at St. Gabriel’s Church. She and her husband farmed in rural Prairie du Chien and were active members of St. Gabriel’s Parish. Roberta was a member of the Farm Bureau and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and most of all spending time with her family.

Eugene J. Ackerman

Eugene J. Ackerman, 82, of Daytona Beach and formerly of Prairie du Chien passed away Monday, Jan. 12, at the Florida Hospital in Daytona Beach.

He was born Nov. 24, 1932 in Glen Haven, the son of John and Alvina (Krogman) Ackerman. He married Mary Lou Ingham on Jan. 3, 1953 in Madison. They were eternally devoted to one another, living their marriage vows every day of their lives; and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary just last week.

Principal placed on disciplinary leave

Bluff View Intermediate School Principal Aaron Amundson has been placed on unpaid disciplinary leave for five days (Jan. 7-13) for using inappropriate language while addressing a group of students who were getting ready for a merit party on Dec. 23, 2014. Amundson will have no contact with any students or be on school grounds during the leave.

Shortly after the Dec. 23 incident, two complaints were filed by parents with the school district stating that Amundson called some students idiots and also used the word “kill” while addressing students in anger because they weren’t listening to his instructions.
