City of Prairie du Chien signs a new contract with its police chief

Also makes hires in water and fire department, seeks new city attorney

Prairie du Chien’s police chief has signed a five-year employment contract with the city, which runs through Dec. 31, 2019, to remain the local police chief.

Chief Chad Abram’s position was solidified following the Dec. 16 common council meeting, during which the council elected, after closed session, to direct the city attorney to draw up the new contract.

This ended any speculation that Abram would be going elsewhere at this time. He was recently the city of Sparta’s first choice for its new police chief (to replace the former chief who left for a Milwaukee suburb), picked from a pool of about 40 applicants. However, he turned that offer down to stay in Prairie du Chien.

Christmas tree pick-up slated for Jan. 10

Now that the holidays have come and gone, the time has come to take down your Christmas tree, but, then what? Well, if you’re in the Prairie du Chien area, your Christmas clean-up solution comes on Saturday, Jan. 10.

Bright and early Saturday morning, at 8 a.m., some volunteers from the Prairie du Chien Jaycees and drivers from the city of Prairie du Chien will drive around town to help remove residents’ holiday burdens.

Jaycees president Tori Pettera said the event is collaboratively sponsored by the Jaycees and the city of Prairie du Chien. “The city provides the trucks and the drivers and we provide the volunteers.”

The Jaycees ask that all trees be bag-less and that all decorations be removed prior to pick-up.

If you would like to have your Christmas tree removed for free, all you need to do is take it out to the closest corner of your block on Friday night, Jan. 9, said Pettera.

More good news for the Opportunity Center

The Opportunity Center has had its share of good news lately. Aside from being allowed to continue serving people with disabilities, the center recently learned that it received a substantial grant to build two new greenhouses.

Thanks to ORC Industries, an independent organization from La Crosse that serves people withdisabilities, two 30-foot by 100-foot hydroponic greenhouses providing fresh fruits and vegetables year-round will be constructed in Prairie du Chien. The amount of the grant is not being disclosed by ORC.

In addition to the ORC dollars, a number of sources are also providing funding for the project: USDA—$47,000, private donor—$20,000, Opportunity Center golf outing fundraiser—$10,000.
“We will be financing the rest,” Opportunity Center Director Pam Ritchie said.

“The project will hopefully start in the spring,” Program Director Angie Engrav noted.

Opportunity Center will continue with business as usual

Employees, clients and supporters of the Opportunity Center in Prairie du Chien can collectively breathe a sigh of relief. Operations will continue as usual thanks to recent federal and state declarations that have allowed services in center settings to carry on for people with disabilities.

“The federal government—Center for Medicaid Services (CMS)—and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) have heard our voices loud and clear. And our voices made a difference,” wrote Pam Ritchie, executive director of the Opportunity Center, in a Dec. 23 memo to those directly affected by the decision. “I want to thank this community for standing up for people with disabilities. It is humbling to see the number of people who have supported us. I don’t know that we can provide any further evidence that the programs and services we deliver here are making a positive impact.”

get past Logan

Prairie du Chien bested La Crosse Logan 41-29 in the La Crosse Aquinas Girls Basketball Tournament Monday night, Dec. 29. 

Prairie led 13-5 after one period and 22-10 at halftime. 

Logan came back to take the third quarter 13-9 to pull within 31-23, but Prairie took the fourth period 10-6 to close out the 41-29 victory.

Thomas D. “Tom” Jordie

Thomas D. “Tom” Jordie, 63, of Prairie du Chien passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014 at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse.

He was born Aug. 26, 1951 in La Crosse, the son of NuVern and Beverly (Young) Jordie. He married Jeanne Crail in Glenview, Ill. on Aug. 26, 1972. Tom was an avid outdoorsman and truly enjoyed travelling and camping.

Loretta M. (Zach) Jelinek

Loretta M. (Zach) Jelinek, 78, of Janesville, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center following a brief illness. 

She was born in Bloomington, on Jan. 19, 1936, the daughter of Lawrence and Frances (Kirschbaum) Zach and was a 1954 graduate of Bloomington High School. Loretta married Arthur F. Jelinek on Oct. 6, 1956, in Glen Haven. A Janesville resident since 1956, she was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and a life member of the VFW Post 1621 Auxiliary. Loretta enjoyed sewing, traveling, baking, but most especially caring and spending time with her family.

Michael A. Miller

Michael A. Miller passed away Dec. 31, 2014 after a two-year battle with kidney cancer. 

He wished to be known for his deep love and affection for his wife, his family, his church family and his many friends. He was especially fond and proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. He also wished to be known for his love of history and of sailing. He believed we cannot control the wind but we can adjust our sails and lived his life accordingly.
