Eagles Telethon achieves 40 years, looks to exceed $750,000 this year

The Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon will reach a major milestone on Saturday, Jan. 31. Not only will this be the 40th year of the community celebration in support of heart and cancer research, but it will also be the year in which donations exceed $750,000. That’s three-quarters of a million dollars!

The 2015 talent show, live auction and eight-hour spectacle will begin at 5 p.m. at Bluff View Intermediate School in Prairie du Chien and last until 1 a.m. Up to 15 raffles and live auction items will include a 2014-15 mens’ Wisconsin Badger basketball, signed by all the players and coaches; a 2014-15 Packer football signed by the team; a Robin Yount signed print; a Corey Hart signed print accompanied by two Brewers club seat tickets.

Travis W. Baughman

 

Travis W. Baughman, 45, passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. 

He was born Feb. 23, 1969 in San Jose, Calif., the son of Conrad and Marian (Ivancovich) Baughman. Travis currently worked as a contractor with his father for Baughman Construction. He was a talented artist and enjoyed painting, tile work and making household items including furniture.

Michael (Mickey) Aschom

 

A former Lansing resident, Michael (Mickey) Aschom, 71, passed away Thursday, Jan. 22 at a nursing home in Rushford, Minn., following a long illness.

He is survived by his wife, Marion; one brother, Norb of Prairie du Chien; and three sisters, Kathy Christopherson of La Crosse, Susan Ekern of Rushford and Julie Buel of Florida; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are Saturday, Jan. 24, at 12 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Rushford.

Evelyn Marie Manning

 

Evelyn Marie Manning, 90, of Wexford, Iowa passed away peacefully at Thornton Manor on Jan. 21, surrounded by her loving family. 

Evelyn was born June 29, 1924 to Leo and Marie (Ferring) Troendle on a farm in rural Lycurgus, Iowa. She was the oldest of four children.

Eastman man charged with fifth OWI

A 45-year-old Eastman man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (fifth offense).

Corey Lee Hammond faces up to six years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Hammond was driving in Prairie du Chien when he attempted to make a turn, missed the street and ended up in snowbank in a nearby yard. Hammond then backed up and proceeded down the street, the complaint said.

A Prairie du Chien Police Officer then stopped Hammond and subsequently placed him under arrest.

Hammond has previously been convicted of an OWI four times.

TOTAL TAXES ON A $100,000 HOME

Full payment or at least the first installment of property taxes in Prairie du Chien are due to the city by Saturday, Jan. 31. (Second installments must be paid to the county treasurer by July 31.) Prairie du Chien tax bills are around $2,890 per $100,000 of property value, which equals a decrease of about $5.39 over the previous year.

A breakdown of the 2014 tax bill, generated by City Administrator Aaron Kramer, can help property owners understand exactly where their money is going.

PdC gymnasts host Dodgeville on Senior Night

Prairie du Chien hosted Dodgeville-Mineral Point in a gymnastics meet at Bluff View Intermediate School Monday night. Dodgeville-Mineral Point won the meet 114.775-87.100. It was Senior Night for Prairie du Chien. 

Jesse Gutknecht scored 4.45 on bars to earn fourth place on the bars.

Paige Severson scored 5.35 on bars to earn third place on bars and scored 7.5 on vault for fifth place.
