Lawrence D. “Larry” Colsch

Lawrence D. “Larry” Colsch, 52, of Wauzeka passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Oct. 5, at the Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien.

He was born July 21, 1963 in Waterloo, Iowa the son of Lawrence and Ruth (Paris) Colsch. He married Leanne Groom on June 9, 1984 at the United Methodist Church in Wauzeka. Larry worked as a truck driver and enjoyed farming. He and Leanne own and operate the Main Street Bar and Grill in Eastman.

Lorraine Lorretta Shulka

Lorraine Lorretta Shulka, 81, of Prairie du Chien passed away Sunday, Oct. 4, surrounded by her family at Agrace Hospice in Madsion.

She was born Nov. 7, 1933 in Boscobel, the daughter of Eldon and Nellie (Ward) Wayne. She married Clarence Shulka on July 31, 1965 in Caledonia, Minn. He preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1994. Loretta worked in nursing for the old Beaumont Hospital and later for Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien spanning 40 years. She belonged to the Apostolic Lighthouse Church in Prairie du Chien where she taught Sunday school.

Chamber presents annual awards

The Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting and awards banquet aboard the Celebration Belle on Wednesday, Sept. 30. About 220 attended.

“An important reason our area is able to continue to grow and prosper is due to the solid foundation that has been built by so many faithful, dedicated individuals who have been in business in the community for so many years,” Chamber President and CEO Bob Moses said. “We are also very appreciative of investors for the support, encouragement and commitment they have shown this past year.”

Nelson True Value supports library expansion

Nelson True Value recently donated $10,000 to the Prairie du Chien library expansion project. “The people of Prairie du Chien have been so good to Nelson True Value over the years and we wanted to give back to the community,” Store Owner Dan Kanis said. “The library project seems to be a very important and worthwhile project for the community and we were inspired to hear about it.” The Prairie du Chien Common Council has approved the $3 million upgrade to the library, with a challenge to the community to raise half of that amount. Pictured, Dan (right) and Jake (left) Kanis present the $10,000 gift to City Administrator Aaron Kramer. “Prairie du Chien is truly one blessed community when it comes to its corporate partners. Time and again, we see them giving back to the community, and one of the leading supporters is Nelson True Value,” Kramer said.

True Value store shaping up

The attractive new Nelson True Value hardware store in Prairie du Chien is coming along rapidly. Last week, framing work was done for offices and a meeting room. Crews are also grinding the floor, painting the interior and focusing on exterior finishes at this time. Additional work to finish the HVAC system has yet to be done as well, according to Marv Bengtson, job superintendent for general contractor Friede & Associates. Owner Dan Kanis said the building is expected to be turned over to True Value for fixturing around Oct. 19. “We’re shooting for a ribbon cutting the second week in December,” he stated, “and a grand opening celebration with sales and giveaways April 1 and 2.” Kanis noted that the farm, ag and paint departments are among the many to be expanded with the new store. Nelson True Value is also seeking historic photographs of Prairie du Chien to be used in a collage displayed on the front wall inside the new facility.

One injured in crash that shut down highway

A rural Prairie du Chien woman was injured in a crash that shut down Highway 18 south of the city for an hour and a half Wednesday evening, Sept. 30, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of the two-vehicle accident near the intersection of Highway 18 and Old Highway 18, at 4:56 p.m. in Bridgeport township.

A 2011 Lincoln automobile, owned and operated by Jean Moret, 55, was westbound on Highway 18. Moret signaled a left turn onto Old Highway 18 and had slowed to wait for oncoming traffic when she was rear-ended by a 2013 Freightliner truck owned by Ursa Major Corp., of Waukesha, and operated by Joshua Cook, 25, of Boscobel.

The Moret vehicle ended up in the ditch on the south side of the highway. Moret was extricated from her vehicle and transported to Crossing River Health for her injuries. Cook refused medical attention.

You’re ‘willkommen’ to celebrate Oktoberfest

Prairie du Chien’s Oktoberfest is as elaborate as any celebration around. And it’s even bigger and better this year, with entertainment for every member of the family—German or not.

In its sixth year, Oktoberfest will welcome, or “willkommen,” partiers to St. Feriole Island in Prairie du Chien Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The fall colors will adda vibrancy to the already lively activities, which collectively serve as a fundraiser for the Memorial Gardens.

Jerry (JR) Hoilien passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 30, in Key Largo, Fla.

Jerry was born in Fort Madison, Iowa on April 27, 1960 to Joyce and Jerry Hoilien. Jerry was an avid hunter and gatherer throughout the rivers and hills of Iowa and Wisconsin. He had a huge heart, great laugh and an incredible smile!

Michael T. “Mike” Lynn

Michael T. “Mike” Lynn, 36, of Sheboygan went to a better life on Sept. 25.

He was born Nov. 3, 1978 in Milwaukee, the son of Thomas and Paula Lynn of Grand Junction Colo. Mike married Emily Ingle in 2006.

Our wonderful son, loved his hunting and fishing life in Prairie du Chien and was given endless love and support from family and friends. Please remember him in your thoughts and prayers.
