Man cited for failure to yield

On Saturday, July 11, at 11:18 a.m. the Crawford County Dispatch Center was notified of a two vehicle crash on State Highway 60/61 at Marietta Valley Road, two miles north of Boscobel.

Gary Peckham, 66, of Richland Center, was driving a 2015 Chevy Silverado. He pulled out from Marietta Valley Road in front of a northbound 2013 Chevy Equinox driven by Linda Oler, 56, of Dubuque, Iowa.

Oler was transported to the Boscobel Hospital where she was treated for bumps and bruises and later released. Oler was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident. Peckham was also wearing his seatbelt and escaped injury.

Oler’s vehicle sustained severe front end damage, Peckham’s vehicle sustained severe right side damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. Peckham was cited for failure to yield right of way.
Assisting at the scene was the Boscobel Rescue Squad, Boscobel Fire Department, Boscobel Police Department and Terry’s Tire and Tow.

Ferryville celebration will have attendees in a daze

A busy and noisy day is in store for everyone in Ferryville on Saturday, July 25. The day begins at 9 a.m. with Market in the Park featuring Amish goods, produce and variety of products in Sugar Creek Park. The antique tractor pull weigh-in runs from 10 a.m. to noon. There are three classes for the pull. The Antique Class, Ageless Farm Class and Non-Turbo Farm Class. At noon, the 9th Annual Antique Tractor Pull begins for all to enjoy. To register for the Antique Tractor Pull, go to www.ferryvilletractor.com. The Antique Tractor Pull is hosted and organized by the Ferryville Antique Tractor Association with raffle tickets on sale now and drawings in the afternoon at the event. Raffle tickets can be purchased before and during the event.

River Ridge welcomes new superintendent

With over 30 years in education, Dr. Jeff Athey is a qualified addition to the River Ridge School District. He began his title of superintendent for the entire school district as well as the K-4 grade principal July 1.

Replacing the temporary district administrator, Tom Andres, Athey is coming into the job with an open mind, open ears and a determined outlook.

Athey has a long history of working in education­— teaching high school English and high school theatre and speech; coaching softball,  baseball, girl’s basketball and  girl’s track; advising cheerleader; directing theatre; and working as an assistant principal and as a principal.

Attending Cornell College in Iowa, Athey received a Bachelors of Special Studies, majoring in English and in theatre and speech, in addition to a coaching minor. Athey started working after graduating from Cornell College.

PdC tennis court project officially complete

The grand opening of the Prairie du Chien tennis courts by Hoffman Hall took place on Saturday, July 11. 10-year-old Eyon Pergande is ready to take advantage of the new Prairie du Chien tennis courts across the street from Hoffman Hall. Eyon was very proud of his door prize—the Spongebob Squarepants headband—that he made sure to put it on right away.

On Saturday, July 11, the Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Department held a grand opening in honor of the completely refurbished tennis courts across from Hoffman Hall.

Before the door prizes were awarded, event attendees were anxious to get onto the court and start playing. Although the anticipation was high, Parks and Recreation Director Mike Ulrich wanted to take a moment to commemorate and honor all the people and businesses who helped make the new courts a reality.

“I’m always happy to have something like this provided to the community,” said Ulrich.

Park Board Chairman Tom Nelson called the remodel wonderful, recalling a meeting where a group of tennis players from the community came to ask for an update. “They weren’t even on the agenda,” Nelson laughed, happy to have been a part of the group to see this project through to completion.

Bagley completes second storm shelter

Better safe than sorry is the motto for the village of Bagley in the case of severe weather striking the area. In May, Bagley’s second storm shelter was completed with the assistance of a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant.

“The grant was for $403,250,” said Village President David “Buck” Schott. Schott also noted that the village’s share in the expense was 12.5 percent, meaning that the village paid $34,000 for the project.

“We were $8,000 over budget because we put in a new storm sewer as was suggested by FEMA,” explained Schott. “We put in a new hydrant and a drain to help keep the water from gathering there. It was actually helpful for the community, too. The drain works for everyone.”

Schott also said that the village may have an opportunity to get some money back from FEMA if there is any left over in the grant fund after the year is over.

Kenneth Edward Otteson

 Kenneth Edward Otteson, 84, of Prairie du Chien, died on July 9, at Sannes Skogdalen Heim in Soldiers Grove. 

Kenneth was born to Ernst S. and Mary Retha (Seipp) Otteson on Sept. 2, 1930 in Prairie du Chien. He was baptized and was confirmed at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. Kenneth graduated from Campion High School, Prairie du Chien in 1948. He served in the U. S Army Reserves and National Guard, joining in July 1951.

Dorritt May Lessard

Dorritt May Lessard passed away at Pittsburg University Mercy Hospital on July 8, at the age of 84.

Dorritt was born in Eastman, on April 19, 1931. She was a dedicated wife and mother, enthusiastically supporting her family throughout her life, providing love, care, and encouragement in whatever life’s journey presented to her family. She was also a dedicated professional, working in the insurance industry until her retirement in 1987. Dorritt enjoyed reading, gardening, and bird watching.

Tammy M. Kansaku

Tammy M. Kansaku, 35, of Prairie du Chien passed away Monday, July 13, at her home after an extended illness. 

The family is planning a celebration of Tammy’s life for a future date that will be announced later. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.

Betty Jean Regal

Betty Jean Regal, 74, of McGregor, Iowa died Saturday, July 11, at Mayo Health System in La Crosse. 

Betty Jean was born on April 28, 1941 to John and Harriet (Koresh) Stevens in Prairie du Chien. She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Prairie du Chien, in 1959. 

Betty was united in marriage with Dennis Regal on Sept. 23, 1961 at St. John Catholic Church in Prairie du Chien. To this union, one son was born. Betty worked at McGregor Loudspeaker in McGregor, Iowa and also owned and operated the Regal Marine in Prairie du Chien.
