Charity Bowl

This is just part of the crowd enjoying a nice, breezy evening and a great meal courtesy of Hardees of Prairie du Chien at the 2015 Charity Bowl Tuesday. Patrons also donated numerous nonperishable food items which will be donated to the Prairie du Chien Food Pantry.

Pickup truck causes damage to two other vehicles

On Aug. 7, at 8:44 p.m., the Crawford County Communications Center received a report of a two-vehicle car crash on County Road E near Easter Rock Lane in the township of Marietta. During the investigation, it was determined there were three vehicles involved in the crash.

Aspen S. Jacobson, 38, Steuben, was operating a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck westbound on County Road E. The Jacobson vehicle struck a legally parked 2012 Dodge Ram pickup truck, which was pushed into a legally parked 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck. Both of the legally parked vehicles were owned by Bradley E. Wellner, 58, Boscobel.

Jacobson was cited for failure to maintain control and operating a motor vehicle without proof of insurance.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Department was Terry’s Tire and Tow.

Man faces drug, disorderly conduct charges

A 30-year-old Eastman man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with several counts including the manufacture of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor bail jumping (two counts), disorderly conduct (domestic abuse), and resisting an officer.

Pierre Diante Gardner faces up to six years and three months imprisonment and fines totalling $41,500 if convicted of all counts.

Man arrested after nearly hitting pole

On Aug. 8, at 2:50 a.m., a deputy with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was patrolling the village of Soldiers Grove when he observed a 2001 Ford Explorer drive off Highway 61, nearly striking a light pole at the intersection of Highway 61 and New Well Road. The vehicle continued driving across New Well Road, went up a steep embankment, through a yard, and then drove back onto Highway 61 traveling southbound.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and identified the driver as Anthony E. Visgar, 38, Soldiers Grove. The deputy observed signs of alcohol impairment and asked Visgar to perform standardized field sobriety tests. Based on the results of the standardized field sobriety tests, Visgar was placed under arrest for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence.

From Tuesday, July 7 to Wednesday, July 15, the Holy Family Parish in Prairie du Chien was able to once again send youth group, the J Walkers, on a mission trip to Birmingham, Ala.

“We were able to go with the help of the George Family Foundation,” said group leader Mary Stoeffler. The foundation gave the travelers from Prairie du Chien $1,500 toward their trip, enabling the area participants to go for $175 each.

The J Walkers consist of high school students from the area of the Catholic faith. It is led by Stoeffler and Kurt Kravchuk. “We’re more of a service oriented group. It is our goal to teach kids to help and to give to others,” explained Stoeffler.

John L. Wachter

 

John L. Wachter, 96, of Monona, Iowa died Saturday, Aug. 8, at his home. 

John Lyndon, son of John and Ethel (Wetzel) Wachter, was born June 25, 1919 in Prairie du Chien. He was baptized in the Zion Evangelical Faith on Sept. 15, 1919 by Rev. Lyndon C. Viel. His boyhood and youth were spent on the Wachter farm north of the city of Prairie du Chien, He graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1937. In 1942 he received his B.S. degree in agriculture and education from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He taught vocational agriculture at Shullsburg and Hillsboro, and for thirty years at Monona, Iowa, for a total of forty years, retiring in 1981.

Navy veteran Chris Ring was escorted by the Prairie du Chien Fire Department fire and rescue boat from Lock and Dam 9 to the beach on St. Feriole Island on Saturday as part of Ring’s swim down the length of the Mississippi River.

Francis Gene Ottaway, 75, of McGregor, Iowa died Thursday, Aug. 6, at Crossing River Health in Prairie du Chien. 

He was born on July 19, 1940 in Sabula, Iowa the son of Eugene Harold and Edith Geneva (McMahon) Ottaway.

Sharon is survived by her children, Chelsea, Conna, Devlin, Kiaron, Isla, Stewart and Keely; her mum Judy (Steve) Petsche, McGregor; her sisters Sarah, Alaina, Kerry and Angla and their families; aunt Pam and uncle Geoff Harper of Cambridge, England; uncle Keith and aunt Joan of Yorshire, England; aunt Donna and her family in Thetford, England; many friends; and her father Peter Farrow of Thetford.
