Highway 18-60 Project Update

Paving was being done near the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 60 Tuesday morning as crews were heading toward the Wisconsin River Bridge.

Rebar was laid down Tuesday morning near The Port, a convenience store and gas station, ahead of the paving that was going toward the Wisconsin River Bridge.

Concrete paving on the Highway 18-60 Project in the town of Bridgeport began on July 25 and has been proceeded quite rapidly. The paving is expected to take three weeks to complete, said Construction Project Leader Jay P. Adams.

Agencies working to make COTR safe

Preparations have been underway at the Country on the River grounds near the construction on Highway 18 in the town of Bridgeport. The Wisconsin DOT, event organizers and the Crawford County Sheriff’s and Highway departments have been working to ensure a safe event for all motorists and event patrons.

With the Country on the River music event beginning Thursday and running through the weekend, it is anticipated that there will be heavy traffic on Highway 18 in the construction zone of the Highway 18-60 Project that is underway in the town of Bridgeport.

While people might think police officers do not want to be filmed, they actually do want to be. In fact, police officers often review these videos as part of their own learning processes. “We review squad videos to look for improvements we can make,” said Sgt. Kyle Teynor.

The Prairie du Chien Common Council is making it even easier for the police force to learn, with help in obtaining body cameras. On Aug. 1, 12 body cameras were received due to a $10,000 grant. “A vast majority of the footage from the body cameras will show a job well done. And, we’ll use them to prove criminal behavior. Believe me, officers want them,” asserted Teynor.

Neil J. Tollefson

Neil J. Tollefson, 88, of Fort Atkinson, passed away Saturday, July 30, at the Edgerton Care Center, Edgerton with his family by his side.

He was born Aug. 23, 1927 in Prairie du Chien, the son of Nealius and Grace (Clancy) Tollefson. Neil would marry Wanda Pixler. He worked for many years at General Motors as an assembler and was a member of the local UAW Post 95. In his spare time, he enjoyed farming and country living.

Theresa M. Teachman, nee Barrette

Theresa M. Teachman, nee Barrette, 64, a resident of Carol Stream, Ill. since 1989, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 31.

She was born July 30, 1952 in Prairie du Chien, to John Henry and Margaritte Barrette.

She graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1970. She moved to Baraboo, working for Teel Plastics. In 1980 she moved to Wheaton and worked for Greater Europe Mission. She met Mark Teachman at a singles ministry at Christ Church of Oakbrook in 1984. They were married on May 31, 1986. Their son, Kyle, was born in 1990.

Taste of the Driftless to raise funds for Democratic parties

The Taste of the Driftless farm-to-dinner event, featuring dishes by area French chef Monique Hooker, will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, at Hidden Springs Creamery in Westby.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisconsin) will be guest speaker at the dinner, which is a fundraiser for the Democratic parties of Crawford, Monroe, Richland and Vernon Counties.

International award-winning cheesemaker Brenda Jensen will host the event, which will begin at 2 p.m. with music, appetizers, games and an auction. Dinner, served sit-down family style, will follow at 4 p.m. After hearing speakers and candidates, guests will enjoy dessert, tours, music and socializing.

The main course will include marinated grilled beef loin with Chimichurri, grilled vegetables, fresh corn, herb-poached salmon and potato salad.

PdC police urge caution following string of thefts

Over the past few days the Prairie du Chien Police Department has taken multiple reports of thefts from vehicles around Prairie du Chien.

These thefts are taking place during the early morning hours and primarily involve unlocked vehicles. Items taken range from vehicle keys, to spare change to small electronics.

If you see suspicious people hanging around or entering vehicles please report the activity to the police department immediately.

Please lock your car doors, your garage entry doors and home doors. Also remove valuable electronics from your vehicles if possible.

Normally, these thefts begin during the spring and fade during the transition to summer. This is the first round of correlated thefts that have been reported this year.

Rock and Roll Reunion a one-day collaboration of regional musicians

Rock and Roll Reunion a one-day collaboration of regional musicians In 2010, a group of 20-plus retired musicians from southwest Wisconsin got together to perform for one day in memory or fellow musician Dale Kidd of Madison. The first Rock and Roll Reunion was held at the Hickory Grove Golf Course in Fennimore and proceeds went to Outreach For World Hope, a nonprofit group helping to feed starving children.

The event was not only successful but a lot of fun for area musicians, so the group vowed to hold the reunion every two years and donate to additional causes as well. The second reunion was held also at Hickory Grove in 2012 and, in 2014, the event moved to Woodman.

This year, the Rock and Roll Reunion will again be held in Woodman on Saturday, Aug. 6. There is no cover charge for the event.

Young helping hands complete mission to clean up after flood

The Holy Family Parish mission group included (front row, from left) Kaitlyn Waller, Gracie Colson, Lindsey Nicholson, Caitlin Nolan, Jessica Bedtka, Veronica Kramer, Lauren Kennedy; (back row) Father Weighner, Weston Hill, Preston Hendrix, Wesley Schwager, Jack Stoeffler, Alexis Nolan, Faith Dillman, Peggy Koresh and Mary Stoeffler. Though Fr. Weighner did not go on the trip, he has been very instrumental in building the parish’s Jaywalkers group, of which many of these kids are current or past members.

The mission group tore tile out of multiple rooms in one building that is being cleaned and repaired to shelter people displaced by future floods.

In October 2015, heavy rains and massive floods inundated Andrews, S.C.—a city of around 2,800 people. Nine months later, devastation remains for many of the residents, and a group of 15 high schoolers and college students from the Prairie du Chien area got to see the ruins first-hand during a mission trip July 5-14.

105 candles: Big birthday, big celebration

These days, people are living longer than ever before, but what’s the secret? Agatha Breuer celebrated her 105th birthday on July 24, so it’s safe to say she’s in on it.

“It was a tremendous party,” exclaimed Agatha, a smile stretching across her face. When asked what her favorite part of the event was, she said, “Oh, just being there and seeing everybody.”

For 105, she said she still loves music, dancing, going to church and playing cards. “I play dirty clubs,” she stated, noting that euchre is another favorite.

As for her taste in music, Agatha loves country and polka. In fact, every year for 35 years, Agatha has made a special trip to Huckleberry’s Restaurant to see the Toe Tappers, one of her favorite local groups. These trips were first made special because she spent them with her late-husband, Fred.
