Virginia C. Kruger

Virginia C. Kruger, 95, of Harpers Ferry passed away Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Thornton Manor in Lansing, Iowa. 

She was born Oct. 25, 1919 in Sparta, the daughter of William and Frances (Schaller) Ziegler. She married Fred Cassel in 1939, who later preceded her in death in 1996. She worked as an assembler for Deltrol Electronics in Milwaukee. She later married Merlin Kruger on Oct. 28, 2000. Virginia was an active member of the Eagles Club and enjoyed gambling and playing cards. She enjoyed time with friends and family and always had a joke.

Ann E. Rowe

Ann E. Rowe, 95, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Chippewa Falls, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Crossing Rivers Health. 

She was born July 28, 1920 in Bloomer, WI the daughter of William and Esther (Ruff) Lendle. She married Buford Rowe on Sept. 7, 1939. He preceded her in death on Jan. 20, 1984.

Leonard “Leo” Weipert, 59, of McGregor, Iowa passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, at Atrium Post Acute Care in Lancaster. 

Leonard Junior Weipert, the son of Leonard Neuman and Ruth Wilda (King) Weipert, was born May 1, 1956 in Waukon, Iowa. He attended Waukon High School.

Prairie du Chien Coast Guard Auxiliary crew saves man from drowning

On Sept. 12, a U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary crew from the Prairie du Chien Flotilla was returning from patrol when crew members observed a man fall from a dock at the Winneshiek Marina north of Prairie du Chien. The man disappeared beneath the water. Quick action by the crew of the Kaylee-Annie located the man who was still beneath the surface and pulled him onto the dock preventing his drowning.

Coxswain Steve Gress stated that he reached under the water trying to locate the man and finally found him still submerged and being pulled beneath the dock by the current. Gress pulled him to the surface, and with crew member Joanie Dickerson, pulled the man from the water onto the dock.

The Prairie du Chien boys soccer team hosted the Richland Center Hornets for Parents’ Night Tuesday evening at the Bluff View pitch.  

The Blackhawks started the game slow and only 2 ½ minutes in, let a Hornet run slip through for an early score and a quick 1-0 deficit.

Christian event at Achenbach farm to celebrate rural life

On Monday, Sept. 21, at the Lonnie and Jane Achenbach farm in rural Eastman, Rural Life Day will celebrate God’s gift of the fruits of the earth and show appreciation toward farmers who are good stewards of these fruits and resources. The event, sponsored by the Rural Life Committee of the La Crosse Diocese, will begin with Bishop William P. Callahan saying Mass at 10 a.m. Clergy Father Viktor Feltes and Father James Weighner will also be there.

Man detained for marijuana possession

On Sept. 11, the Crawford County K-9 Unit initiated a traffic stop on a 1991 Toyota pick-up in the town of Seneca. Deputies made contact with the operator, Michael P. Baures, 52, Seneca.

Baures told deputies he had ingested marijuana earlier in the evening and showed signs of marijuana use, which led to further investigation into his impaired driving. K-9 Breck gave a positive alert to the presence of a controlled substance odor. Marijuana and paraphernalia were found on Baures.

Baures was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle with a restricted controlled substance (first offense), possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle without insurance and operating a vehicle without a seat belt.

Vehicle hits garbage container, man arrested

On Sept. 12, at approximately 2:30 a.m., a Crawford County sheriff’s deputy was patrolling Highway 60 in Bridgeport Township when he observed a vehicle make an abrupt turn off Highway 60 onto Vet Lane, striking an object that was later identified as a Waste Management garbage container. The speed of the vehicle significantly increased after turning. The deputy pursued the vehicle to the end of Vet Lane, where the driver exited the vehicle and fled into the woods on foot. After a foot pursuit, the driver was taken into custody and identified as Damien J. Prew, 26, Wauzeka.

Possible charges of operating a motor vehicle after revocation, no interlock ignition device, hit and run property adjacent to highway, failure to maintain control and reckless driving are being referred to the District Attorney’s Office.

Prew is currently held at the Crawford County Jail on a probation violation.

City intervenes with Bridgeport incorporation filing

A border battle of sorts has transpired between Bridgeport Township and the city of Prairie du Chien.

Bridgeport filed an incorporation petition with Crawford County Circuit Court on April 19 and published a notice of such filing in the Courier Press on July 22, taking the initial steps necessary to become a village. The city of Prairie du Chien subsequently intervened, approving, at an Aug. 4 council meeting, a resolution indicating willingness to annex the entire township into the city, as authorized by state statute, because it’s a party of interest to the petition.

“We want to protect our borders from Prairie du Chien,” Bridgeport Town Chairman John Karnopp said, noting that the city’s annexation of property for the new hospital sparked the township’s action toward incorporation.

PdC man killed in Trempealeau County crash

A Prairie du Chien man died in a three-vehicle crash that killed two and injured another on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 12, in Trempealeau County.

The crash occurred at 2:48 p.m. on Highway 35/54, just west of Sonsalla Road in the town of Trempealeau.

According to the Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Office, investigators at the scene determined that an eastbound pickup truck driven by James Harnish, 56, of Trempealeau, crossed the center line and struck a westbound SUV, driven by Allison Nolan, 20, of Hastings, Minn.

Nolan lost control of her SUV and rolled over in the westbound ditch.

The pickup then struck a westbound car driven by Jonathan Helgerson, 36, of Prairie du Chien, head on. Harnish and Helgerson were pronounced dead at the scene.

Nolan was flown to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
