Villa Succés moves to new location

Starting January 1, 2016, the alcohol and drug services currently offered Villa Succés will now be provided at the Mayo Clinic Health System–Franciscan Healthcare, Prairie du Chien clinic, located at 800 East Blackhawk Ave.

Mayo Clinic Health System–Franciscan Healthcare’s Substance Abuse Services will continue to provide the same alcohol and drug services, including the crisis hotline (608-306-7981), from the clinic location. It is their goal to make this transition as smooth as possible for our patients.

Hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. To contact substance abuse services during normal business hours, call 326-0808.

Crossing Rivers Health Clinic adds obstetrics to its services

Crossing Rivers Health Clinic providers extended obstetric services to the community Nov. 2. They are thrilled to be guiding women and their families from the beginning of pregnancy through delivery, postpartum care and the growing stages of family health care.

Team providers include Steven Bush, M.D., chief medical officer, CRH Center for Specialty Services OB/Gyn and OB team consultant; Owen Vincent, D.O., family medicine with obstetrics; Matthew Olson, M.D., family medicine with obstetrics; and Terri Payne, R.N., certified nurse midwife and family nurse practitioner.

The conversation began in late summer 2015 regarding Crossing Rivers Health Clinic’s decision to bring these additional services to southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa.

“We’ve been building a good group of providers who will provide families ease in the process. Deliveries will start early in the new year,” Dr. Olson stated.

Carp page proud to carry out his duties

Kyle Wilkinson has attended the annual Droppin’ of the Carp in Prairie du Chien since he was a small boy. So, it only made sense a couple of years ago that he become the very first carp page. As the youngest “member of the royal carp family,” Wilkinson, 17, is the only other diplomat than King and Queen Kenny and Jan Meyer and Carpmaster Shawn Redman to reside over the unique event and its associated Carp Fest.

“I brought up the idea to founder Tom Nelson and he thought it was a good idea,” Wilkinson said. “I asked him why there wasn’t a prince or princess or other royalty and he had me write up a two-page paper stating why I wanted to take on the role.”

Derrold Wayne Hartley

Derrold Wayne Hartley, 91, of Soldiers Grove, passed away Dec. 25, 2015, at Bland Bekkedal Center for Hospice Care in Viroqua after a short illness.

He was born Dec. 31, 1923, in Richland County to Lloyd and Myrle (Smith) Hartley. On June 8, 1948, he was united in marriage to Ruth Brock in Richland Center.

A life-long farmer, Derrold farmed in Richland and Crawford counties his entire 91 years. He served on many farm related board of directors. He loved his family, friends and his farm. He enjoyed a good practical joke and lunch at the Kickapoo Corners.

Wauzeka-Steuben

Seneca defeated host Wauzeka-Steuben 41-37 in a Ridge and Valley girls basketball game Friday night.

The score was 20-15 in favor of Seneca at the half. Wauzeka-Steuben outscored Seneca 22-21 in the second half but it wasn’t quite enough as Seneca prevailed.

Christmas Dinner at St. Gabriel’s free to all

For anyone seeking the company of others on Christmas Day in Prairie du Chien, a free Community Christmas Dinner is available at noon, at the St. Gabriel’s School cafeteria, 515 N. Beaumont Rd. The menu includes turkey and ham, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, squash, green bean casserole, salad, cranberry sauce and homemade pies.

Individuals and families of all sizes, incomes and beliefs are welcome to dine in, carry out or receive deliveries in Prairie du Chien; deliveries and carryouts must be ordered in advance and carryouts need to be picked up by 11:30 a.m. If you are dining in, reservations are appreciated by calling 326-8321, (608) 306-6120 or (563) 880-8469.

Transportation is available and the facility is handicap accessible through the back door. Limited parking is available on Prairie Street.

The Knights of Columbus Campion Council 1840 is celebrating its 100th year of service to the Prairie du Chien community and area. When you hear the Knights of Columbus, do you think of rodeos or Tootsie Rolls only or a Catholic service-oriented group of men? Fr. McGivney founded the order in the 1800s. He is known as the Apostle of the Young and the Protector of the Christian Family Life in an era when widows and orphans were overlooked.

Mississippi River on the rise

The Mississippi River at McGregor was at 13.51 feet at 8:45 a.m. on Dec. 21, according to the La Crosse Office of the National Weather Service. Flood stage is 16 feet. The river is predicted to reach 14.1 feet on Dec. 22 and then slowly recede. Thirteen feet is considered the action stage.

The Kickapoo River was at 9.37 feet at 7:21 a.m. on Dec. 18 at Soldiers Grove. Flood stage is 13 feet. The automated gauge readings are unavailable and gauge readings are being taken manually.

The Kickapoo River was at 9.6 feet at Gays Mills at 10 a.m. on Dec. 19. The river was at 13 feet on Dec. 18. Minor flooding occurs at 13 feet. The automated gauge readings are unavailable and gauge readings are being taken manually.

The Kickapoo River was at 8.25 feet at Steuben at 8:45 a.m. on Dec. 21. The river is predicted to reach 8.8 feet on Dec. 22. Flood stage at Steuben is 12 feet.

Meth investigation leads to two arrests

In early December, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation into the illegal sale/distribution of crystal methamphetamine in the township of Prairie du Chien.

Following the investigation, it was determined that Austin Bennett, 27, of Waukon, Iowa, was distributing large amounts of methamphetamine to persons in and around Crawford County.

Crawford County Sheriff’s Office personnel were able to make a controlled buy of methamphetamine worth $1,500 from Bennett on Dec. 14. As Bennett was leaving the area on Ambro Road where the controlled buy was set to take place, he was stopped and arrested along with his passenger Jessica L. Burmester, 34, of Kendall.

Bennett is being held in the Crawford County Jail on a $10,000 cash bond, and Burmester is also in the Crawford County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond.

Both parties face possible charges of possession of methamphetamine and delivery of methamphetamine.
