Principal placed on disciplinary leave

Bluff View Intermediate School Principal Aaron Amundson has been placed on unpaid disciplinary leave for five days (Jan. 7-13) for using inappropriate language while addressing a group of students who were getting ready for a merit party on Dec. 23, 2014. Amundson will have no contact with any students or be on school grounds during the leave.

Shortly after the Dec. 23 incident, two complaints were filed by parents with the school district stating that Amundson called some students idiots and also used the word “kill” while addressing students in anger because they weren’t listening to his instructions.

Comedic madness at "Fun" Raising Follies

Tom Nelson and Cindy Hertrampf fronted a musical number alongside the Klement’s Famous Racing Sausages. This was just one of many highlights from the “Fun” Raising Follies event, in support of the local Mississippi River Sculpture Park, this past weekend. (Photos by Randy Paske)

The Extreme Synchronized Swim Team shared their talents with the Follies audience. They included (front row, from left) Pauline Clanton, Suzette Cunningham, Lori Beckum, Randi Kleusner; (back row) Mike Rider and Dave Hemmer.

Mike McCoy and Erin Sanders put on a charming performance as the beloved Sonny and Cher during the “Fun” Raising Follies for the Mississippi River Sculpture Park. Visit sculpturepark.org for more information.

“Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine,” Ken Stoeffler, bravely went solo on the Follies stage, shaking his money maker.

Baton Twirlers were Mary Novey, Randi Kluesner and Cathie Sutton.

Randy and Kathly Paske took advantage of a photo opp with the three Klement's Famous Racing Sausages who attended the Follies.

The National Brass group included Bob Meyer, Kurt Kuenzel, Doyce Huebsch, Jim Klosterboer and Steve McCorkindale.

PdC Historical Society gains $7,000 in grants

This is one of three scenes painted on a 17-foot-long panel on one wall in the former music room at Wyalusing Academy. The title of the scene is “La Salle at the Mouth of the Mississippi 1682.” Water streaks can be seen on the right side of the painting as well as paint loss in the upper right corner.

The title of this scene is “Father Hennepin at the Falls of St. Anthony 1680,” painted by Sister Mary Gertrude (Ida Mary Klein) around 1910.

The Prairie du Chien Historical Society is the recipient of two grants, from the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) and the Alliant Energy Foundation, totaling nearly $7,000. The NEH Project Assistance Grant for $5,999 will be used toward planning, supplies and staff training for the preservation of a photographic collection documenting community history. Alliant’s $1,000 community grant will assist in the conservation of several murals removed from the former Wyalusing Academy/St. Mary’s Academy in Prairie du Chien.

Included among the approximately 10,000 photographs in the historical society’s collection are images of the community’s schools, churches, homes, railroads, downtown street scenes and businesses; events such as floods, fires and parades; economic activities such as commercial fishing and clamming; and particular areas such as the Villa Louis Historic Site, St. Feriole Island, Fort Crawford Hospital and Mississippi River.

Richard (Dick) Aschom

A former Lansing resident, Richard (Dick) Aschom, 73, passed away Jan. 9 at his home in Brookfield after a long illness.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; two sons Stephen and Chris and one daughter, Melissa and several grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Norb of Prairie du Chien and Mickey of Rushford, Minn.; and three sisters Kathy Christopherson of La Crosse, Susan Ekern of Rushford and Julie Buel of Florida.

Funeral services are Wednesday, Jan. 14 in New Berlin, Wis.

Norma J. Erdenberger

Norma J. Erdenberger, 83, of Prairie du Chien passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Crossing Rivers Hospital.

She was born April 29, 1931 in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Irvin and Emma (Rubel) Walz. Norma was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Prairie du Chien. She married Jack Erdenberger on Nov. 5, 1952 at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. He preceded her in death on Dec. 26, 1992. She and her husband farmed in rural Prairie du Chien for many years. Norma was a volunteer caregiver for many people throughout this community and was a proud past recipient of the Danny Ruehlow Award.

Fay L. McCullick

Fay L. McCullick, 95, of Wauzeka passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Crossing Rivers Hospital. 

He was born Aug. 29, 1919 in Seneca, the son of Charles and Sadie (Comstock) McCullick. He served in the US Army during WW II in the European Theatre where he was the recipient of four Bronze Stars. He married Dorothy Eckleberry on June 20, 1945 and she later preceded him in death on Oct. 5, 2004. Fay worked as a heavy equipment operator for Becker and Tuckwood Construction in Lancaster. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish with his family. He was a member of the Wauzeka American Legion and was proud to have taken the Honor Flight with his son this past May.

Bonnie Belle Cull, 91, Prairie du Chien, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, at the Vernon Memorial Hospital, Viroqua. 

Bonnie was born on Feb. 24, 1923, on a farm in Grant County, near Bloomington, to John and Nina Belle (Brodt) Harris. She attended Military Ridge Country School in Patch Grove Township through the eighth grade where she won a local spelling bee competition at the state level.
