Two wild deer killed in Allamakee County during the recent hunting season have been confirmed positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD), marking the third year in a row the disease has been confirmed in a wild Iowa deer, all in Allamakee County.

Haydn Street crossing ruled closed a fourth time

The Haydn Street railroad crossing in Prairie du Chien was ordered closed two years ago by the Wisconsin railroad commissioner, for the third time. Even after a fourth decision, last summer by the circuit court, to dismiss an appeal and close the crossing, it remains open today.

The two mainline tracks and the nearby spur track intersecting with Haydn Street have been in question for more than 15 years.

The first decision to close the crossing was made by the commissioner in 2001. Because nearby business owner Keith Coburn, of Frazier’s Old Faithful Inn, felt it would adversely affect his business to close the crossing, he’s exercised his rights and kept fighting the railroad for a decade and a half.

Public school open enrollment application period is underway

Wisconsin’s public school open enrollment application period, which allows parents an opportunity to send their children to any public school district in the state, runs from Feb. 1 to April 29 for the 2016‑17 school year.

Traditionally, children in Wisconsin are assigned to public school districts based on the location of their parents’ home. Open enrollment is a tuition-free opportunity for parents to apply for their children to attend a public school in a school district other than the one in which they live.

The state’s open enrollment program is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and began in the 1998-99 school year with 2,464 students transferring from their home district to a nonresident district. The program has grown over the years with 53,188 students transferring during the 2014-15 school year.

In July 2015, Crossing Rivers Health expanded to offer a new Center for Specialty Care to patients in southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa who want to be seen by specialists locally rather than drive out of town for such care. Having these specialists available regularly also means more opportunities for community education.

“The Center for Specialty Care was developed to meet the health care needs of the area, as they were identified from a community health needs assessment,” stated Mandy Pettit, clinic nurse manager and lactation consultant for Crossing Rivers Health. “A lot of our growth has come from that assessment. We’re really happy to bring these services to life right here, close to home for our patients in the region.”

The Center for Specialty Care is located at the medical center, in the outpatient services area from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and in the urgent care area after hours.

Removal of snow near fire hydrants discussed

Coincidently, last week’s snowstorm arrived one week after the Prairie du Chien Police and Fire Commission discussed removal of snow from around city fire hydrants. The conversation centered around who takes responsibility over removing the snow.

According to Prairie du Chien Fire Chief Harry Remz, it is the city’s territory. However, the city is asking for cooperation from its residents and property owners in taking care of snow around the hydrants in their neighborhoods, if possible.

“If you’re right there shoveling the sidewalk, we would greatly appreciate it if you can just clear the snow from around the hydrant at the same time. And if you are unable to move the snow, maybe you can ask the person who shovels for you,” Remz said. “It’s a matter of public safety.”

Charles “Chuck” Evans Trotter

 Charles “Chuck” Evans Trotter, 73, of Harpers Ferry, Iowa passed away peacefully with his wife by his side and his family in his heart on Feb. 2, in Prairie du Chien. 

Chuck was born Jan. 30, 1943 to Clyde and Nina (Brynildson) Trotter in Chicago, Ill. At an early age, the Trotter family moved from Chicago to Maynard, Iowa to work the family farm. After graduating from West Central High School in 1961, he joined the United States Navy where he served on the USS Littlerock until he was honorably discharged in August 1965.

The Lady Timberwolves led the Flying Arrows 19-17 at the half. 

Bridgette Myers led all scorers with 16 points. Amber Patterson netted 13. Sierra Schier scored 7.
