‘Riverfront Rock’ concert to celebrate local garage bands

On Sunday, July 10, the Prairie du Chien Historical Society is presenting “Riverfront Rock,” a concert celebrating the rich history of local garage bands from all eras. Headlined by the funk rock band Levitating Train Committee (LTC) which has strong area roots, the concert will start at 1 p.m. and will feature rock music of the 1960s through today. The public is invited.

Hosted by the Dousman House, located on St. Feriole Island in Prairie du Chien, the event is a fundraiser for the Fort Crawford Museum. In addition to LTC’s performance, there will be memorabilia and memories from local legends of live music. Also, anyone who was ever a member of an area band is encouraged to think of this as a reunion opportunity, and may bring their own memorabilia to display for the afternoon.

Anonymous donor challenges RABAS supporters

An anonymous donor is putting a challenge out to the community to help Rivers & Bluffs Animal Shelter volunteers (RABAS) reach their goal of an animal shelter for the Prairie du Chien area in the near future. Starting July 15, donations will be matched until the $10,000 goal has been met or until Sept. 15, whichever comes first.

“This is very exciting news for the dedicated group of volunteers” stated Bev Pozega, RABAS volunteer. She added, “With the community’s support, there is a possibility to raise $20,000.” For those who may have been thinking about donating to RABAS, now is the time to act as your donation will actually be doubled thanks to the generosity of this donor, who wishes to remain anonymous.

Checks can be mailed to RABAS PO Box 421 Prairie du Chien, WI. 53821. Please specify “RABAS Donor Match” on the memo line of your check. Rivers & Bluffs Animal Shelter is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization. Your donation is tax deductible.

Memories of red, white and blue abound at Eastman parade

Less than a brushstroke

Andrew Wroble uses a technique he learned from his days as an undergraduate studying printmaking to help make his ink wash work special.

Wroble shows off two of his remaining plastic building costumes including a barn, complete with cows and pigs, and a library.

This india ink painting is called “Winter: (Nobel’s Island)”.

On the top of the hill just past Effigy Mounds, there is a basement studio full of artwork that follows the life of its creator, Andrew Wroble.

Born in Casper, Wyo., Wroble had a long trek to becoming a resident of Harpers Ferry, Iowa. Yet, his love of art has made most of the journey with him. Wroble said his first real interest in art came out of being drafted into the United States Army and sent to Europe in the 1970s. “I love being an artist,” said Wroble. “Ever since then, I’ve always painted and I’ve always drawn.”

Wroble recalled his days spent at the Top Hand, Cate and O’mea Cattle Company, in Libby, Mont. “The environment controls art,” said Wroble.

And, in Montana, Wroble’s art was confined to what he described as “saddlebag drawing.” “It was on the back of those U.S. Forest Service posters,” laughed Wroble. “I’d take one down and then someone would put one back up. I had a lot of paper.”

Weekend single-vehicle crash takes life of Bagley man

On Saturday, July 2, at approximately 4:12 a.m., the Grant County Sheriff`s Office Communications Center was notified of a one vehicle crash on Ready Hollow Road near Gifford Lane in Wyalusing Township.

It was reported there was one occupant trapped in the vehicle and the occupant appeared to be deceased. Upon further investigation, it was determined that Erasmo Gonzalez, age 28, Bagley, was southbound on Ready Hollow Road in a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am. It appears as if Erasmo failed to negotiate a turn and left the roadway on the south side.

After leaving the roadway, the Gonzalez vehicle turned sideways down a steep embankment thus going air-born and striking two trees with the roof of the vehicle before coming to rest on its wheels in the ditch. Erasmo was pronounced dead at the scene. West Grant EMS, Bloomington Fire and JAWS Unit, Bagley First Responders, and B+M Towing assisted at the scene. The case remains under investigation.

Council votes to move phase two of Marquette Road construction ahead to 2017

The second phase of the Prairie du Chien Marquette Road reconstruction, from Mooney Street to La Pointe Street, originally scheduled for 2017, was pushed back one year, to 2018, due to indications of funding issues from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The city was informed in October that the DOT had delayed the project, along with many others across the state, and that planning would also be delayed.

Since then, Prairie du Chien’s public works staff and administration have reworked the city’s construction and finance plans to anticipate a 2018 Marquette Road schedule. A reconstruction of North Michigan Street was moved ahead on the calendar and a Community Development Block Grant to fund part of the Michigan Street project was submitted.
