Mildred J. Prew

Mildred J. Prew, 98, of Prairie du Chien passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, at the Prairie Maison Care Center. 

She was born Oct. 13, 1917 on Wall Ridge in Eastman, the daughter of John and Margaret (Wall) Phillip. She married Peter Prew on Aug. 31, 1938 at St. Wenceslaus Church in Eastman. He preceded her in death on June 14, 2003. Mildred was an active member of St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien and enjoyed the outdoors, especially her gardens.

David Fowler Todd

 David Fowler Todd, 85, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 18, peacefully surrounded by his family at Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse. 

Dave graduated from Graveraet High School in Marquette, Mich. in 1948. He attended Northern MI University and graduated with a major in music and minor in biology in 1952. He worked in Florence, Wis. for one year as band director, and then served in the US Army for 2 years in Korea.

Bloomington site of Holiday Tour of Homes, Breakfast with Santa

Charlie and Cathy Martin’s home is located at 631 6th St.

Tom and Andrea Crubel’s home is located at 220 County A.

Dwaine and Dolores Meyer’s home is located at 220 Canal St.

Virginia Bierman and Don Dressler’s home is at 320 Congress St.

St. Mary’s School in Bloomington is hosting its annual Breakfast with Santa and Holiday Tour of Homes on Sunday, Nov. 29. Breakfast is from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the school gym.

The tour of homes runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at each house or at the breakfast.

The Charlie and Cathy Martin home is located at 631 6th Street. This is a very unique home, as it was originally built by Charlie’s uncle as a barn, but over the years was eventually turned into a home, and now is back in the family. Charlie and Cathy purchased this home in 2013. Since moving in, they have added a studio, windows to one of the bedrooms, and planted over 70 trees.

Tom and Andrea Crubel’s home is located at 220 County A. This home was custom built in 1979, and the Crubel’s purchased it in 2001, recently remodeling it in 2013. This tri-level house includes a floor-to-ceiling fireplace and vaulted ceilings in the living room.

CMN Hospitals holiday card features PdC teen’s artwork

Braden Ball, 16, of Prairie du Chien, holds a copy of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals holiday card that features his artwork. Braden is shown with his mom Sherrie and Rena Cash, CMN Hospitals specialist at Gundersen Health System.

Each year, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals holds a contest in which kids can submit their drawings for selection to be a design for a holiday card.

This year’s contest winner is Braden Ball, a 16 year old from Prairie du Chien.

 Braden, a freshman at Prairie du Chien High School, has experienced several health challenges and has undergone around 20 surgeries due to having an undiagnosed genetic disease. While having this disease, Braden has always found a reason to smile.

In the future, Braden would like to be a physical therapist or invent video games.

Arrest warrant issued for man suspected of attempted murder

An arrest warrant was secured Nov. 16 in Clayton County District Court for the arrest of 25-year-old Brandon James Thoma on a possible charge of attempt to commit murder, a Class B felony. The possible charge stems from an incident that occurred on the morning of Nov. 10 at an Elkader home.

According to the Elkader Police Department, Thoma drove a car from Pella, Iowa to Elkader where he intended to kill another person. He broke into the home after the victim’s husband left for work and assaulted her by striking and kicking her repeatedly.  The victim was found by her husband when he returned from work. She was taken to Central Community Hospital by ambulance and later transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Law enforcement officers were able to determine the identity of the suspect, who was eventually located in Madison, Wis. The Clayton County Attorney’s Office is working on securing extradition for Thoma from Wisconsin.

Man guilty of hitting pedestrian, OWI, fleeing the scene of collision

A 33-year-old Farmersburg, Iowa man was charged Nov. 16 in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of hit and run - great bodily harm, and one count of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing injury - first offense, with a prohibited alcohol concentration of .15 or more.

Christopher K. Gossman entered a plea of no contest on Nov. 16 and was found guilty on both counts.

A sentencing hearing for Gossman has been scheduled for Jan. 13, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. in Crawford County Circuit Court. Gossman faces up to 16 years in prison and fines totaling $52,000.

According to the criminal complaint, Prairie du Chien police officers responded to the scene of an accident on Oct. 31 at approximately 10:50 p.m. in which a pedestrian was struck by a pickup truck.

Surprising wind, snow and ice leave hunters stranded on the river

To honor those who died as well as those who risked their lives to rescue others, a commemorative sign now stands in Ferryville acknowledging the regionally historic, tragic and deadly Armistice Day Storm of Nov. 11, 1940. The permanent sign was unveiled to the public at a ceremony last Tuesday, Nov. 10, at River View Park.

“It’s part of our regional history in the Ferryville and Lansing area, and all up and down the river. When you read about this storm, it’s amazing anybody survived,” said Joanne White, of the Ferryville Tourism Council.

Prairie du Chien common council hears proposed budget

An overview of the city of Prairie du Chien’s proposed 2016 budget was given to the common council Tuesday night, prior to the council’s scheduling of a public hearing for Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m. in the council chambers. City Administrator Aaron Kramer said exact numbers won’t be known until next week when state tax credits are revealed, but he estimated the overall impact on tax payers in Prairie du Chien to be a $46.18 increase on a $100,000 home. This approximation includes county, school and Southwest Tech portions of the tax bill.

The city’s budget includes a 1.12 increase in the tax levy—$2,300,300 up from $2,274,723—or an $25,577 in additional levy. Key aspects, as recommended by the finance committee, include:

•a wage increase of 30 cents for employees not covered under a contract.

•a garbage fee increase to $12.50 per month for garbage, recycling and clean sweep services.

June M. Lee, 95, of Platteville, died on Friday, Nov. 13, at Gray’s Nursing Home, Platteville. 

June was born on May 24, 1920, the daughter of Roy and Louella (Bausman) McLimans. She met her future husband, Delbert F. Lee, at the roller rink in Platteville. They were united in marriage on Dec. 30, 1939. He preceded her in death on March 5, 1973. June worked at the Platteville Hospital as a house-keeper for 20 years. June was an avid bowler; she was inducted into the first class of the Platteville Bowling Association Hall of Fame.
