Few comments about COTR move are split in opinion

The public was given its time to share comments with the Prairie du Chien Common Council, regarding support or opposition to the relocation of Country on the River, from Bridgeport to St. Feriole Island. However, those representing the public and vocalizing their opinions, at the council meeting Tuesday night, included only a small percentage of community stakeholders.

Two spoke in person and five more provided emails and letters, which were read into the record at the meeting. A half-dozen others attended the meeting but did not comment. The council only listened to the viewpoints, as it will make a decision on the matter at its Sept. 20 meeting.

People in crash injured, lie about man with a gun

On Sunday, Aug. 28 at 6:21 a.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office took a report from Crawford County dispatch of a number of individuals receiving care at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien.  

It was initially reported that three subjects received a ride from a bar in Platteville, as the driver lost his keys to his vehicle. The men said the unknown driver took a person to Prairie du Chien, dropped that person off and then started taking them back to Avoca. During the trip to Avoca, the driver showed the trio a gun and told them to get out of the vehicle. They said they all jumped from the vehicle as it was moving.

Man charged with his seventh OWI

A 58-year-old Soldiers Grove man was charged Sept. 1 in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (seventh offense).

Thomas E. Finley faces up to 10 years in prison and $25,000 in fines if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Finley was pulled over by a Crawford County Sheriff’s Deputy in the village of Soldiers Grove at 11:40 p.m. on Aug. 22, on suspicion of OWI.

Finley was arrested and taken to Crossing Rivers Hospital in Prairie du Chien. Finley had six prior convictions for OWI and therefore his blood alcohol content was restricted to .02 in order to legally drive.

Finley refused to submit to a chemical test of his blood, so a search warrant was obtained and Finley’s blood was drawn. Samples were labeled, sealed and sent to the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene in Madison.

Crawford County drug abuse roundtable discussion announced

The fourth event in a series of roundtable discussions regarding opioid and illegal drug abuse has been announced by Sen. Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) for Friday, Sept. 9, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., at the county administration building in Prairie du Chien. These events have brought together community members who share ideas for combatting the growing epidemic of illegal drug abuse.

Area health officials, law enforcement, local elected officials and members of addiction recovery organizations will be in attendance to discuss community challenges and solutions to the increasing rates of methamphetamine, heroin and opioid addiction in western Wisconsin. This events is open to the public. No RSVP is required.

Previous roundtable discussions were held in La Crosse, Viroqua and Tomah. For more information, individuals can contact Sen. Shilling’s district office at (608) 782-2785 or Sen.Shilling@legis.wi.gov.

Experience nation’s largest carriage driving competition at the Villa Louis

Held annually, the Villa Louis Carriage Classic highlights competitive carriage driving in arena and obstacle classes. Experience this elegant event, which is the largest carriage driving competition in the nation, on Sept. 9-11.

“This stylish event recalls the brief heyday of the Dousman family’s famed trotting horse operation, the Artesian Stock Farm, a Standardbred training facility,” said Susan Caya-Slusser, Villa Louis site director. ”The Carriage Classic celebrates the pinnacle of the stock farm and allows guests to experience this great tradition.”

More than 100 drivers will hitch finely-trained horse of many breeds to new and restored carriages in several different events. Events will take place in a fenced arena as well as on the lawns and grounds surrounding the Villa Louis estate.

Gilbert E. “Gib” Weber

Gilbert E. “Gib” Weber, 86, of Glen Haven passed away Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, after an extended illness. Gib was surrounded by his wife and family at the time of his passing. 

He was born Feb. 24, 1930 in Bloomington, the son of Anton and Frances (Wegmann) Weber. He married Phyllis Wright on June 12, 1950 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington. Together he and his wife farmed near Beetown. Gib served on the Beetown Town Board and as a chairman for many years. Gib enjoyed family gatherings, playing cards and deer hunting.

Beba B. Cecka

Beba B. Cecka, 93, of Prairie du Chien passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Appleton.

She was born May 31, 1923 in Richland Center, the daughter of William and Leona (Hillesheim) Durnford. She married William “Tony” Cecka on May 13, 1944. He preceded her in death on May 31, 1997. Beba worked as a beautician in Madison and later assisted her husband in operating the family business, Tony’s Grill in Prairie du Chien, for many years. She was an active member of St. John’s Church in Prairie du Chien.

Mary Janell Becwar

Mary Janell Becwar, 94, of Prairie du Chien passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, at the Crossing Rivers Hospital in Prairie du Chien. 

She was born April 17, 1922 in Prairie du Chien the daughter of George and Josephine (Mezera) Wachuta. She married Albert Becwar on Nov. 21, 1945 at St. Gabriel’s church in Prairie du Chien. He preceded her in death on March 18, 2005. Janell worked in the kitchen at the Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien for 17 years. She belonged to the Irish Ridge Homemakers Club and was an active member of St. Gabriel’s Parish. Janell loved everybody and was considered a special “grandma” to many. She enjoyed playing games and cards especially with her monthly card club.

Animal shelter may move to business park following property trade with city

A property trade that is likely to move Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter’s prospective building site to Prairie du Chien’s North Gateway Business Park was unanimously approved by the common council following closed session of a specially scheduled meeting Tuesday night.

According to terms of the trade agreement, the city would take possession of the animal shelter’s land located southwest of the intersection of 22nd Street and Campion Boulevard, while RABAS would take ownership of the land mainly south of the intersection of Cliffwood Drive and Vena Court. Also, the city would make a $15,000 contribution toward the construction of the new animal shelter.
