Beba B. Cecka

Beba B. Cecka, 93, of Prairie du Chien passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Appleton.

She was born May 31, 1923 in Richland Center, the daughter of William and Leona (Hillesheim) Durnford. She married William “Tony” Cecka on May 13, 1944. He preceded her in death on May 31, 1997. Beba worked as a beautician in Madison and later assisted her husband in operating the family business, Tony’s Grill in Prairie du Chien, for many years. She was an active member of St. John’s Church in Prairie du Chien.

Mary Janell Becwar

Mary Janell Becwar, 94, of Prairie du Chien passed away Sunday, Sept. 4, at the Crossing Rivers Hospital in Prairie du Chien. 

She was born April 17, 1922 in Prairie du Chien the daughter of George and Josephine (Mezera) Wachuta. She married Albert Becwar on Nov. 21, 1945 at St. Gabriel’s church in Prairie du Chien. He preceded her in death on March 18, 2005. Janell worked in the kitchen at the Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien for 17 years. She belonged to the Irish Ridge Homemakers Club and was an active member of St. Gabriel’s Parish. Janell loved everybody and was considered a special “grandma” to many. She enjoyed playing games and cards especially with her monthly card club.

Animal shelter may move to business park following property trade with city

A property trade that is likely to move Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter’s prospective building site to Prairie du Chien’s North Gateway Business Park was unanimously approved by the common council following closed session of a specially scheduled meeting Tuesday night.

According to terms of the trade agreement, the city would take possession of the animal shelter’s land located southwest of the intersection of 22nd Street and Campion Boulevard, while RABAS would take ownership of the land mainly south of the intersection of Cliffwood Drive and Vena Court. Also, the city would make a $15,000 contribution toward the construction of the new animal shelter.

“Freedom is not free.” That’s why, if there was ever a time to join forces with our fellow Americans in support of those who make sacrifices for our country, Saturday, Sept. 10, would be the day.

A 150-mile escort parade in honor of Adam Eilers, a  29-year-old wounded Army veteran from Garnavillo, will traverse southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa. Eilers will ride in a red truck behind 100 to 150 motorcycles and other vehicles, starting in Hazel Green and making stops in Guttenberg, Iowa, Prairie du Chien and Glen Haven before ending up in Hazel Green for a big celebration.

“We would love it if the public would come on out and line the streets with American flags, red, white and blue signs and other gestures of support,” encouraged the ride’s administrator, Jo Nell Coates, who will lead the ride on her motorcycle, donning an American flag.

The Prairie du Chien boys soccer team opened their home season Tuesday evening hosting the Richland Center Hornets.  

The Blackhawks played a well balanced game of procession and control. Prairie started out quickly. Only 3:54 into the game, Chas Sagedahl delivered a through ball to Jon Dyer who put it in for the first goal.

New judge working toward treatment court

New Crawford County Circuit Court Judge Lynn Rider officially began her duties on Aug. 1 and is working on starting some new practices regarding offenders who are involved with alcohol or drugs.

“It’s been very good so far,” said Rider, 56, about her first few weeks as judge. “I’ve gotten lots of support from other judges and courthouse staff to help me get started.”

Time to get a little bit dirty at the Mississippi Mud Run

Ready to get down and dirty? Then Prairie du Chien’s Mississippi Mud Run, on Saturday, Sept. 17, is the event for you, said event coordinator, Lorie Floyd.

With the water high and muck abundant, you wouldn’t think it would take much to set up, but you’d be wrong.

“Since I’ve been doing it for years, it’s gotten easier. Now, that everything’s in place, I contact people and start coordinating about two to three weeks out and tell them the where and when,” said Floyd.

After receiving permission from landowners, including the state of Wisconsin and the WSOR railroad, event organizers can get in and start setting up the obstacle course.

Effigy Mounds celebrates NPS anniversary with special presentation

On Thursday, Aug. 25, the National Park Service (NPS) celebrated its 100th anniversary as an organization. In order to commemorate the anniversary, Effigy Mounds National Monument held a special presentation regarding the foundings of the NPS and the monument itself. According to Chief Ranger Bob Palmer, who gave the presentation, you’d be surprised how many connections you can draw to Iowa.

Prior to 1916, there were 12 national parks in the United States, the first of which was Yellowstone National Park, founded on June 30, 1864, by President Abraham Lincoln.

The Prairie du Chien girls golf team hosted the Prairie du Chien Invitational Friday morning at Prairie du Chien Country Club. 

Darlington won the 18-hole tournament with a team total of 404 strokes. Southwestern-Cuba City was second with 407.
