Eastman seeks DNR approval for wastewater treatment upgrade

The village of Eastman has requested approval from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to upgrade its existing wastewater treatment facility.

The village’s treatment facility has historically performed adequately and complied with DNR discharge standards. The facility, however, is approximately 25 years old and various unit treatment processes need to be rehabilitated, replaced and upgraded to accommodate projected future residential growth and help maintain overall system performance reliability over the next 20 years. Also, the village is required to comply with new effluent standards for phosphorus for continued discharge to Pine Creek.

Building inspectors tour River Ridge facilities

By Correne Martin

The River Ridge Building and Grounds Committee held a special three-hour facilities tour Tuesday morning of both its Patch Grove and Bloomington sites. The three school board members on the committee as well as two other individuals running for board attended. Also touring were three state building inspectors, District Administrator/Elementary Principal Jeff Athey and representatives from contractor McKinstry and one from the community.

The tour served two purposes, according to Athey: 1) It covered the annual walk-through of both buildings with maintenance supervisor, Troy Marshall, and addressed the need to determine what projects the district may want to tackle during the summer, and 2) it allowed the building inspectors to see what’s happened at the facilities since state code updates were mandated.

Three seats up for election in River Ridge School District

Of the seven seats on the River Ridge School board, three are up for election on Tuesday, April 5.

On the ballot will be the names of incumbents Kerri Schier and Randall Martin as well as newcomers Jason Cathman, Cory Moravits and Nick Kovacs.

The seats of Schier, Martin and Lea Breuer, who has decided not to run for re-election, are up for contention. Three votes may be cast for those school board seats.

After hearing word from the community that Nick Kovacs wanted to withdraw from the race, he was contacted Tuesday and responded by saying the law will not allow him to withdraw (since his name is already on the ballot), but he is throwing his “support to Cory, Kerri and Jason so that the vote is not split.”

Bone marrow donor registration drive held April 8 at PdC Dentistry

By Correne Martin

Becoming a registered bone marrow donor is simple. It involves swabbing a person’s cheeks for 30 seconds each to collect cells for use in matching with a patient. Otherwise, all that is needed is a quick eligibility screening and a completed registration form.

New potential donors, between the ages of 18 and 55 and in good general health, are encouraged to attend a free bone marrow donor registration drive on Friday, April 8, from 1 to 4 p.m., at PdC Dentistry. Appointments are preferred but not required; call 326-8458.

“The more people we can get on the list, the better,” stated Kelly Thompson, whose aunt battled leukemia and was a bone marrow donation recipient. Thompson herself got on the national bone marrow registry at age 18 in her aunt’s honor.

Thompson noted that this drive is also being held in honor of Samson Boylen, who died of complications from leukemia. Samson was the son of Scott and Kelli Boylen.

Three-term mayor to face challenger on the April 5 ballot

DAVE HEMMER (I)

Incumbent Dave Hemmer has served as mayor of Prairie du Chien since unseating Karl Steiner in 2010. He is finishing his third term. He has lived in Prairie du Chien his entire life and is married to Lori and works for Prairie Sand and Gravel.

1. What are the most important issues facing Prairie du Chien?
The completion of the Marquette Road project that has been pushed back to 2018 is an important issue. We plan to do a total reconstruction of North Michigan Street and a lot morepublic works projects.  Also, I’d like to see more focus on economic development and to see us keep going on recreation projects, like the bike paths. We also want to get the library expansion completed.  Another big thing is our comprehensive plan is about 10 years old. We just started working on updating that and that’s going to be a large undertaking.
