Fr. John W. Wambach, S.J.

Let us pray in thanksgiving for the life of our brother Fr. John W. Wambach, S.J., who was called to eternal life on Sept. 15. Jack died at St. Camillus, in Wauwatosa. He was eighty-two years old, a Jesuit for sixty-five years, and a priest for fifty-two years.

Freda M.E. Reynolds

Freda M.E. Reynolds, age 90, of Richland Center, formerly of Boscobel, died on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Harvest Guest House, in Richland Center.

She was born on April 15, 1926, at Halls Branch, Crawford County, to Joseph and Freda (Adams) Zajicek. She attended school at Reynolds country school, where her future husband William Reynolds also taught school. She graduated from Boscobel High School. She was married on Feb. 6, 1948, at the Methodist Church in Boscobel to William Reynolds, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 2004.

Attempted homicide charges filed after 3-year investigation into assault at Rock on the River

***BREAKING NEWS***

A Dubuque man has been apprehended in association with a three-year investigation involving the assault of another man at Rock on the River in Bridgeport.

Charges have been filed with the Crawford County District Attorney’s office against Anthony Runde, 34, for attempted first-degree intentional homicide and aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm, according to a news release Crawford County Sheriff Dale McCullick issued after the Courier Press went to press early Wednesday afternoon.

The sheriff’s department and Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation, for the past three years, have been actively investigating the assault of Joshua Milligan, 30, of Dubuque, Iowa. In July of 2013, according to the release, Milligan was assaulted while attending the Rock on the River music festival in the township of Bridgeport. The assault took place in the campground associated with the event.

As Prairie du Chien residents may have noticed, there have been several steam-powered cars cruising city streets and the surrounding area in recent days. The 21 vintage vehicles are mostly Stanley Steamers and their owners are staying at Microtel Inn and Suites while enjoying a five-day Prairie du Chien Steam Car Tour from Sept. 12 to Sept. 16.

Celebration of homecoming activities is taking place at River Ridge High School next week, Sept. 19 to the 23. The theme is “Board Games” and the football game will be against Shullsburg on Friday night at 7 p.m.

Wednesday evening will kick off community participation with a night of family fun and entertainment at the high school. A color run will start the night, from 6 to 7 p.m., on the Fitness Trail, near the softball field at River Ridge High School. A soup and sandwich meal, provided by a Safe and Stable Family Grant, will be available at the same time.

Also Wednesday evening will be the skit, lip sync, and coronation program in the high school gym, beginning with naming of royalty at 7:30 p.m. A 50/50 raffle will take place later.

Wauzeka-Steuben hosts homecoming this week

It’s homecoming week in the Wauzeka-Steuben School District.

Activities essentially begin on Wednesday, Sept. 14 evening, with the powder puff football game. The freshmen-sophomore game starts at 6:30 p.m., and the junior-senior competition is at 7:15 p.m. A community bonfire will follow the games.

On Friday, Sept. 16, a pep rally will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Doll Gym. This includes skits, the athletic teams, cheers, the pep band, etc. At 4:30 p.m., the parade will be held in downtown Wauzeka, followed by tailgating at the football field at 5 p.m. The football game against Kickapoo-La Farge will start at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, the homecoming dance will take place in the Doll Gym from 8 to 11 p.m., with the grand march at 9 p.m.

Soccer team suffers
first loss of season
The Prairie du Chien boys soccer team hosted Dodgeville/Mineral Point United Tuesday night in a Southwest Wisconsin Conference confrontation.
The strong, well-matched teams played hard and fast on the soggy and soupy Bluff View field with both teams having multiple scoring opportunities through the first half, all denied by an effective defensive opposition. The first 45 minutes ended scoreless.
Tuesday was Parents Night, so at half the Blackhawks welcomed, thanked, introduced and recognized their extremely supportive parents.
The battle continued in the second half with injuries and fatigue starting to take its toll on the teams. It wasn’t until the 33rd minute that Dodgeville found a chink in the Prairie defensive armor and slipped a goal in just off left post.

COTR to stay in Bridgeport

Country on the River organizers have withdrawn their request from the city of Prairie du Chien to relocate to St. Feriole Island in 2017, according to an email the city received Tuesday morning.

For now, the country music festival, owned by Townsquare Live Events, will remain at the Bridgeport property where it’s been since 2012. The request to use the island will no longer be on the city’s Sept. 20 council agenda.

According to Prairie du Chien City Administrator Aaron Kramer, an email sent by Matt LaRose, vice president of Townsquare Live Events, read: “Thank you for all of your hard work on assisting us through the relocation process to St. Feriole Island. At this time, we are going to withdraw our request to relocate on the island.

“The Wisconsin DOT has given us our variance and allowed us to stay at our current site.

“I do encourage you and all members of the council to come out this year and see the event.”

Crawford County to hold flag disposal on Sept. 26

On Monday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m., the Crawford County American Legion will again hold its annual flag disposal program. This program will be held in conjunction with the regular meeting of the Crawford County Council of the American Legion.

The Caya-Bunders Post #68, of Prairie du Chien, will sponsor the program this year in Prairie du Chien.

Ken McCormick, Crawford County American Legion commander, asks all county residents who have or are flying American flags to take a look at them. If they are worn or tattered, please turn them in so they can be properly retired.

Old worn flags may be turned in to any Crawford County American Legion member or at the Crawford County Veterans Service Office, 225 N. Beaumont Rd., Suite 137, in Prairie du Chien, before Friday, Sept. 23.
