Forum to host southwest Wisconsin’s State Senate and Assembly candidates

Thursday, Oct. 27, at 6 p.m., the Vernon Women’s Alliance will host a candidates forum at the Viroqua Elementary School cafetorium, 115 Education Ave., Viroqua. All are invited to attend and submit questions to those running for State Senate and the State Assembly.

Participating will be 32nd State Senate district candidates Jennifer Shilling, Dan Kapanke, and Chip DeNure as well as Alicia Leinberger, candidate for the 96th State Assembly District. Representative Lee Nerison was unconfirmed at press time. Each candidate will give an opening and closing statement, in addition to responding to audience-submitted questions.

Tranel, Bennett to engage in Boscobel forum

The two candidates to represent the 49th District in the Wisconsin Assembly are expected to attend a forum in Boscobel one week before Election Day.

Republican incumbent Travis Tranel and Democratic challenger Jesse Bennett face off in the Nov. 8 election for the district that includes all of Grant County and a small portion of Lafayette County.

Boscobel Public Library and GFWC Boscobel Women’s Club will host a question-and-answer forum for the candidates at 7 p.m., Nov. 1, at the library. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Gain strength together with new cancer support group

For cancer sufferers and survivors, family members, friends and caregivers, it’s so important to know there are others out there going through similar disheartening circumstances. Just being in the company of those individuals who have been touched by any type of cancer is comforting and motivating.

Because of the reassurance she’s personally felt while working with the most compassionate, Christine Carlson, a breast cancer survivor, wants to channel her energy into starting a cancer support group in Prairie du Chien.

The first meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 26, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Polodna Room at Crossing Rivers Health. The free meetings will follow the third Wednesday of every month at that same time. Individuals touched by any form of cancer are welcome.

Clean Sweep Friday, Oct. 28

Friday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the 2016 Crawford County Clean Sweep event will once again take place at the Crawford County Highway Shop, one mile south of Seneca. All county residents who can provide proof of residency may participate in the event.

Chemicals accepted include:

•Unused, damaged, canceled, banned, or otherwise unwanted agricultural chemicals, including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides, and wood preservatives.

•Other agricultural chemicals including veterinary supplies, lead paint, acid washes, wood finishes, solvents and engine cleaners.

•Household chemicals including paint, stain, used oil, oil filters, and antifreeze.

Household CFL bulbs and fluorescent tubes will be accepted (for quantities over 50 bulbs/tubes, a $.25/bulb charge will apply).

Crawford County will likely get FEMA funding for roads, bridges

Crawford County Emergency Government Director Jim Hackett told the Crawford County Board Tuesday morning that the county will almost certainly get FEMA assistance for the flood and rain damages caused by the storms of Sept. 21 and 22.

“We will reach the threshold,” said Hackett, who noted that the threshold for the 12-county area that sustained damages to roads, bridges and other public infrastructure is $8.5 million. Hackett said  Vernon County will go over $6 million. An estimate, as of Sept. 29, for Crawford County was $3,463,950. “It’s a matter of when, not if,” said Hackett about the possibility of receiving FEMA funding.

The 12 counties include Adams, Chippewa, Clark, Columbia, Crawford, Eau Claire, Jackson, La Crosse, Monroe, Richland, Vernon and Wood.

Due to heavy rain on Sept. 21 and Sept. 22, there was a train derailment with no injuries, widespread damage and two fatalities in southwest Wisconsin.

Man charged in local homicide

A Hampton, Ga., man accused of murdering his girlfriend in the town of Bridgeport, was charged with first degree reckless homicide in Crawford County Circuit Court Monday afternoon, Oct. 17.

Jimmy D. McDaniel, 49, appeared via video at his initial court appearance and began crying as Judge Lynn Rider read the charge to him. McDaniel continued to cry throughout most of the hearing.

sweeps Riverdale

Top seeded Seneca swept visiting eighth-seeded Riverdale three games to none in Division 4 Regional volleyball Tuesday night. 

Seneca won by scores of 25-18, 25-9 and 25-18 to advance in the playoffs. They will host No. 4 Ithaca on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the regional semifinal.

Willis Werner Johanningmeier

Willis Werner Johanningmeier, 95, of Monona, Iowa died Sunday, Oct. 16, at Great River Care Center, McGregor, Iowa. 

Willis was born on July 14, 1921 to William and Johanna (Wagner) Johanningmeier in Clayton County, Iowa. He attended country school through the eighth grade. Willis was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa.
