Dubuque man charged with attempted homicide for beating at Rock on the River in 2013

Man charged in local homicide

A Hampton, Ga., man accused of murdering his girlfriend in the town of Bridgeport, was charged with first degree reckless homicide in Crawford County Circuit Court Monday afternoon, Oct. 17.

Jimmy D. McDaniel, 49, appeared via video at his initial court appearance and began crying as Judge Lynn Rider read the charge to him. McDaniel continued to cry throughout most of the hearing.

sweeps Riverdale

Top seeded Seneca swept visiting eighth-seeded Riverdale three games to none in Division 4 Regional volleyball Tuesday night. 

Seneca won by scores of 25-18, 25-9 and 25-18 to advance in the playoffs. They will host No. 4 Ithaca on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the regional semifinal.

Willis Werner Johanningmeier, 95, of Monona, Iowa died Sunday, Oct. 16, at Great River Care Center, McGregor, Iowa. 

Willis was born on July 14, 1921 to William and Johanna (Wagner) Johanningmeier in Clayton County, Iowa. He attended country school through the eighth grade. Willis was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona, Iowa.

Seneca wins Ridge and Valley title

Seneca swept visiting Wauzeka-Steuben three games to none in a Ridge and Valley volleyball match Thursday night. 

The victory secured the conference championship for the Seneca girls who improved to 11-0 on the season and 7-0 in conference action. 

Wauzeka-Steuben fell to 3-10 overall and 3-4 in the Ridge and Valley.

Detention basins, debris catchers anticipated to mitigate flooding issues

Flood mitigation work has recently changed the landscape significantly along Mondell Hill, just east of Prairie du Chien beside Highway 27. Trees were removed, grading is being done, and two detention basins and a bypass storm sewer are being built. The hope is for this municipal project to slow rainwater and debris flowing down from the bluffs, thus alleviating runoff flood damage when heavy rain events occur.

According to Matt Muchow, professional engineer and on-site manager for Vierbicher Associates, crews moved the earth for a north bypass, from Webster Street to Godden Pit, over the past few weeks. Last week, work consisted of mostly grading along Highway 27.

“We just started making basin 1 [last] week,” Muchow said. “We’ll put the trash rack and pond outlet in, in about a week. The grading for basin 2, by Jackson Street, and the trash rack and pond outlet there will also be done soon.”
