Kapanke officially requests recount in the 32nd district

After reviewing the results of the certified canvass, 32nd Senate District Republican candidate Dan Kapanke has announced his official request to perform a recount districtwide. Kapanke challenged Democrat Jennifer Shilling for her seat in the Nov. 8 election. After the initial results were canvassed, vote totals revealed that Shilling finished just 56 votes ahead of Kapanke in the race.

His request is “due to the fact that the results were extremely close. A recount will ensure each and every vote that was cast is recorded correctly and fairly,” a campaign spokesman said in a statement Nov. 22.

According to Crawford County Clerk Janet Geisler, the Crawford County Board of Canvassers will meet at the county administration building, to conduct the recount for the 32nd Senate District, on Monday, Nov. 28, Tuesday, Nov. 29, and Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 9 a.m. each day. The recount is expected to take three to six days across the district.

Kyle Wilkinson was falling behind in high school and didn’t have enough credits, heading into his senior year, to graduate on time. He also had a history of difficulty coping with the stress and interpersonal challenges presented in the high school setting. So, when the Wisconsin National Guard Challenge Academy was introduced, he decided it was the right fit for him.

Kyle, 18, the son of Beth Fitzl and John Hying, is a student at Prairie du Chien High School. But this semester, he is enrolled in the challenge academy, which began July 21, in Fort McCoy and ends with graduation on Dec. 17.

Kyle and his family learned of the alternative education program when Prairie du Chien teacher Heather DeBruin and Dean of Students Karen Sjoberg suggested the opportunity.

Many people in their 80s or older can probably recall when it wasn’t at all uncommon, especially in rural areas, to have births in homes rather than hospitals.
