Monona woman charged with possession of meth

A 24-year-old Monona, Iowa woman has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of methamphetamine and one count of operating a motor vehicle while revoked.

Taylor M. Knockel faces up to 4.5 years in prison and $12,500 in fines if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, a Crawford County Sheriff’s deputy made a traffic stop on the Knockel vehicle. Knockel was arrested for driving after revocation and transported to the Crawford County Law Enforcement Center.

A search of Knockel’s purse revealed a plastic baggie containing meth, the complaint said.

PdC man, Iowa woman charged with meth possession

A 30-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of methamphetamine (repeater).

Kyle L. Vanderbilt faces up to 3.5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

A 35-year-old Garber, Iowa woman has also been charged with one count of possession of methamphetamine arising from the same incident.

Tamara Messler faces up to 3.5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, the vehicle Messler was driving was stopped by a Prairie du Chien police officer because Messler’s driving privileges were suspended. Vanderbilt was a passenger in the Messler vehicle.

Vanderbilt was searched and a baggie with meth residue was found, according to the complaint. Messler was also searched and a baggie containing meth residue was found, the complaint said.

PdC Main Street aims to show what it can do

It’s a familiar situation of concern that PdC Main Street could lose its status with the Wisconsin Main Street program, if the organization doesn’t have $35,000 in the bank and hire a part-time director by June 30. But the volunteers of PdC Main Street—whose quintessential purpose is to support and develop a thriving downtown—feel strongly about the progress they’ve made. They wish to show the community what they can do, raise the necessary funds and move forward with an attitude that can bolster the heart of the community.

PdC Main Street, formerly the Prairie du Chien Downtown Revitalization Inc. (PDRI), reorganized itself in 2015. Without a full-time director, downtown business owners and managers stepped forward on a completely-volunteer basis to foster good will.

PdC grapplers beat MFL Mar Mac

On Thursday, Dec. 8, the Prairie du Chien Blackhawk wrestling team was host to MFL Mar Mac. Prairie du Chien won 38-33. 

The evening started off with many special events. Parents and local sponsors were recognized and the winners were announced for the annual gun raffle. 

Wrestling started off at 285#. After a scoreless first period, Jerrod Osterkamp was able to power in a half nelson to pin his opponent.

Leary L. Fischer

Leary L. Fischer, 80, of Mount Hope, passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 9, at his home. 

 

He was born in September of 1936, in Woodman Township, the son of John and Ruth (Koening) Fischer. On Oct. 8, 1960, Leary was united in marriage to Maurice A. Riley.

Change of venue denied in murder case

A motion for a change of venue was denied by Crawford County Circuit Court Judge Lynn Rider at a Dec. 8 hearing for a 49-year-old Hampton, Ga. man charged in the death of a 53-year-old town of Bridgeport woman.

Jimmy McDaniel has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the death of his girlfriend Linda Kline.

Overall property taxes in Prairie du Chien will decrease slightly

The 2017 tax levy needed to support the city and other taxing jurisdictions was approved by the Prairie du Chien Common Council Tuesday night. It includes a 2.55 percent increase, which is higher than the annual average so far this decade (1.27 percent). It is also the largest increase in the levy since 2009 (7.97 percent increase).

With the city’s construction growth and the recent closing of two Tax Increment Finance districts, the city’s mill rate will decrease, though, to about $9.11 per $1,000 of assessed valuation in city property taxes, down from $9.12 per $1,000 one year ago. This will mark the second consecutive year the mill rate has decreased. The owner of a $100,000 house will pay $910.73 in city property taxes, down from $911.88 last year, and considerably lower than the $968.47 they would have paid in 2010.

Veterans can choose health care locally

Southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa veterans can now receive timely access to health care in Prairie du Chien when the states’ Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities cannot provide such care. Through the new Veterans Choice Program, Crossing Rivers Health can provide primary care, inpatient and outpatient specialty care and mental health care for veterans enrolled in the VA health care system when the VA lacks available specialists, has long wait times or is located more than 40 miles from the veteran’s home.

“This all came up in 2014 after the [Veterans Health Administration scandal of reported negligence in the treatment of veterans],” said Laura Moore, Crawford County veterans service officer. “This is what Congress decided could alleviate some of the issues.”
