Vehicle crashes into ditch, arrested for second OWI

A driver was witnessed venturing left of center, on Highway 18 near Military Ridge Road outside of Mt. Hope, which resulted in an arrest for operating while intoxicated, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.

During the early morning hours of Friday, March 24, a deputy traveling west on Highway 18 saw a vehicle travel left of center and into the deputy’s lane of travel at about 12:50 a.m. The vehicle then drove off the road and into the ditch.

Contact was made with the driver, Lyle Clark, 28, of Mt. Hope, who was unaware of what had happened and appeared intoxicated, according to the officer. Field sobriety tests were administered and it was determined that Clark was intoxicated. Clark was arrested for second offense OWI.

The vehicle was removed from the ditch by B&M Towing, of Bloomington.

Familiar postmaster hopes to continue to deliver hometown feel in Prairie du Chien

Lori Long was designated the new postmaster of the Prairie du Chien Post Office on Oct. 29. She was the official in charge for about a month before then, when Darryl Martin retired from the post.

Long is a familiar face to Prairie du Chien. She and her husband moved to the community in 1980, and raised their four children here.

Ironically, on Oct. 29, 1994, she started working for the U.S. Postal Service as a part-time flexible clerk in the Lancaster branch. After a couple years there, she took a position in the Prairie du Chien office. Then, in 2006, she was promoted to business service network representative at the USPS district office in Milwaukee, where she worked with medium to large internal and external customers sending mail, understanding regulations and solving problems.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Store/Younkers were among her biggest accounts.

Immunizations are the second most important medical advancement since people have been on this earth. They save 9 million lives across the globe each year and have the potential to save an additional 16 million lives annually if effective vaccines were deployed against all potentially vaccine-preventable diseases.

Crossing Rivers Health Emergency Medical Director Dr. Kevin Whitney stresses the importance of vaccines for a number of reasons.

“They decrease people’s likelihood of finding themselves in the emergency room,” Whitney assured. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that, among children born in the last 20 years, vaccinations will prevent more than 21 million hospitalizations and 732,000 deaths.

4-year-old found safe after getting off at wrong stop

By Correne Martin

Never tell your kids you’re calling the cops because they are being bad.

Those words of advice come straight from a parent who experienced his worst nightmare Wednesday, March 22, after school let out in Prairie du Chien.

Dwight Kussmaul was waiting for his two young daughters to get off the bus one block from their home, on Beaumont Road. His third-grade daughter arrived first and shared a frightening message: her younger sister, Jaelyn, a 4-year-old kindergartener, was missing.

“She said she wasn’t on the bus,” he recounted.

Because the B.A. Kennedy Elementary students board the bus before their Bluff View Intermediate counterparts, big sister was expecting Jaelyn to be on there. But she wasn’t.

Vehicle malfunction likely in crash

A young Prairie du Chien woman’s vehicle apparently malfunctioned, causing a crash that damaged a guardrail in rural Bridgeport Thursday, March 23, around 10:50 a.m., according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

Shalli Poots, 19, was driving west on Highway 60 in a 2004 Jeep Liberty when her vehicle started shaking, due to a mechanical malfunction, Officer Shawn Lenzendorf said. Poots told the officer the Jeep started pulling toward the center line. As she was trying to pull it back into her lane, she hit the northside guardrail, causing her vehicle to spring back across the eastbound lane and hit the northside guardrail before going through the guardrail, down the embankment and coming to a rest on its wheels.

Poots complained of minor head pain and was transported to Crossing Rivers Health for evaluation. Due to disabling damage, the Jeep was towed by Milo’s Towing, of Prairie du Chien.
