Dennis Hamann

Dennis Milton Hamann, 68, of Garnavillo, IA was born the son of Milton F. and Wilma (Witte) Hamann on June 14, 1946, in Postville, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Farmersburg, IA. Following graduation from Garnavillo High School, Dennis served his country in the United States Army, where he received his A.A. degree in music. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Dennis married Beverly Behrend at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, IA on July 20, 1968, a union that was blessed with two children. Dennis farmed for over 50 years but continued helping his neighbors with farm work after he retired.

Elizabeth Wagner

Elizabeth Ann Wagner, 68, of Elkader passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. She was born February 21, 1947, in Owatonna, MN, to Charles Robert and Virginia (Swenson) Harris. Following high school, she attended a Truck Driving School. She was a NE Iowa Transit bus driver for five years.

She was united in marriage to David Wagner on June 18, 2004.

Elizabeth loved flowers, gardening and her pond in the backyard. She also enjoyed fishing, golfing, cooking and especially spending time with family.

MEET MUSICIAN SOPHIA LANDIS


Elkader native Sophia Landis is pursuing her dream of a music career.

Music has been in Sophia Landis’ life for as long as she can remember. The 24 year-old Elkader native began piano lessons at the age of three.

“We had group lessons after pre-school,” she said.  “I seemed to pick it up pretty quick.”

Roslyn Lembke

Roslyn Lembke, 95, passed away Monday, April 20, 2015, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.  Roslyn was born January 28, 1920, in Farmersburg Township, daughter of Arthur and Hilma (Schmidt) Ihde. She was baptized and confirmed at Clayton Center. She went to Hope and Mecklenberg school.

She was united in marriage to Lester Lembke on May 9, 1939. The couple farmed Lester’s home place, moving to Elkader in 1994.  One daughter, Geraldine, was born to this union.

George “Bud” Witte

George F. “Bud” Witte, 91, of Garnavillo, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2015, at the Guttenberg Care Center.  Bud was born December 19, 1923, to Harvey Witte Sr. and Florence (Tieden) Witte, in Elkader. He was united in marriage to Bernadine Moser on April 22, 1951. She passed away March 23, 2003. Bud was a longtime farmer in the Garnavillo area, and a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an avid fisherman, a member of the “Dead Lake Five” Canadian Fishing group, the Elkader Golf and Country Club and Peace United Church of Christ (UCC) in Elkader.

Betty Engelhardt

Betty Pauline Livingston Engelhardt, 88, of Elkader, passed away with God’s grace, on Monday, April 20, 2015. Betty was born to Russell and Vergie (Wilson) Livingston on November 29, 1926, in rural Highland Township.

Betty married Allen Engelhardt on February 24, 1945. Three children were born to this union, Marsha, Mark and Joyce. Betty lived in Elkader for over 50 years.

William “Bill” Koehn

William Henry “Bill” Koehn Jr., 89, of Elkader, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2015, at his residence. He was born October 26, 1925, in Communia to Rose (Behrens) and William Koehn. On February 8, 1958, he was united in marriage to Sharon Leete at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader.

Bill served honorably in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked for Water Tower Paint and repair for 20 years in Clear Lake, IA. He also worked for the State DOT for 20 years prior to retirement.

Bill enjoyed fishing, coon hunting, gardening and telling stories.
