Vernon Henning

Vernon Henry Henning, 74 of rural Farmersburg, Iowa, died Friday, June 5, 2015 at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader, Iowa. He was born on January 30, 1941, in Farmersburg, Iowa to Arno and Erma (Radloff) Henning. Vernon was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg. He graduated from M-F-L Community High School and was in the United States Army from 1963-1965.

Don Henkels

Don Gerard Henkels, 51, of Monona, Iowa formerly of Garnavillo, Iowa died on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 after a two-year battle with cancer, at the Elkader Care Center in Elkader, Iowa. He was born on May 19, 1964, to John and Verna (Althoff) Henkels in McGregor, Iowa. He was baptized on May 31, 1964, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Guttenberg, Iowa, and confirmed on April 4, 1976, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. Don graduated from Garnavillo High School. Don was employed with Innovative Ag Service, Monona Wire and Affordable Improvement.

Norma Olson

Norma J. Olson, 73, of St. Olaf, died Thursday, May 28, 2015, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born February 15, 1942, in Spencer, to Albert and Lucy (Needham) Geno. Norma attended school in Elkader, where she graduated with the Class of 1960.

She was united in marriage to Leland Olson on June 17, 1961, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader. Three children were born to the couple.

Great River Rumble is coming! Paddlers to begin trip in Elkader

Paddlers get ready for a trial run of a week-long trip that begins July 26 in Elkader.

When the Great River Rumblers return to Northeast Iowa in July, they hope they’ll receive a better weather welcome than the one they got last week. Several paddlers did a trial run of the group’s next trip, launching Tuesday morning in Elkader. The trip started a bit behind schedule due to stormy conditions.

Jane Dennler

Jane Roberta Dennler, 76, of Elkader, died Friday May 22, 2015, at the Elkader Care Center. She was born August 1, 1938, in Los Angeles, CA, and raised by John and Grace (Kemp) Neylan. Jane attended country school and St. Joseph’s Catholic School until her senior year, when she transferred to Central High School, where she graduated with the Class of 1955.

Wilbur Schultz

Wilbur Glen Schultz, 96, of Elkader, died Tuesday, May 26, 2015, in Elkader. He was born September 25, 1918, in Giard Township, Clayton County on the home farm, 2 ½ miles north of Farmersburg, to John and Ella Mina (Kuthe) Schultz. Wilbur was baptized on October 11, 1918, and confirmed on August 28, 1932, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona. He attended rural schools.

Helen Taylor

Helen Marie (Knoke) Taylor, 98, of Coon Rapids, MN, previously of Elkader, passed away on May 14, 2015.  Helen was born April 22, 1917, in Klemme, IA, the second child born to Fred H. and Ella (Glawe) Knoke. She was baptized at the Reformed Church in Klemme on July 1s, 1917.
