Life sometimes takes strange turns. Take Nin Glawe’s life, for instance.

Nin was always interested in art. In high school at MFL, Monona, she took lots of art classes. After high school, she attended Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo to study commercial art. She had visions of moving to Seattle and finding a job using her talent in some form. Maybe graphic arts.

BOND VOTE IS JUNE 30

Voters in the communities served by Central Community Schools will go to the polls Tuesday, June 30, to decide the fate of a $6 million bond referendum. If the bond passes, work at the school would begin next year and finish about 36 months later. If voters reject the plan, the school board could be forced to readjust spending priorities.

LOCKER HAS NEW OWNERS

It closed on Saturday, January 31, 2015, as Edgewood West and reopened on Monday, February 2, as Arlington Locker LLC when Lyndall and Nancy Winter took ownership of the business. They immediately entrusted its management to their daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Bruce Hubbard.

Eunice Johnson

Eunice Ivanelle (Kregel) Johnson, 84, of Strawberry Point, formerly of Garnavillo, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa.  She was born on April 20, 1931, the daughter of Elmer and Mildred (Schmidt) Kregel, in Garnavillo Township, Clayton County, Iowa, on the same farm where her father and grandfather were born.

Ilo Glawe

Ilo Sophia Glawe, 90, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2015, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. She was born on February 2, 1925, in Cox Creek Township near Littleport, to Joseph and Katherine (Hochhaus) Beck. Ilo attended Littleport Public School and graduated in May 1942.  She then attended Upper Iowa University for two years and taught school at Waucoma and Colesburg.

On October 23, 1947, Ilo was united in marriage to LeRoy Glawe. Three children were born to this union. The couple farmed in Lodomillo Township for 34 years, before retiring to Strawberry Point. LeRoy passed away on August 20, 1995.

Vernon Peuker

Vernon Gene Peuker, 76, of Edgewood, Iowa, died at his home on Saturday, June 13, 2015.  He was born on September 12, 1938, at his grandparents farm near Elkport, the son of Paul Christ and Geraldine Amanda (Waterman) Peuker. Vernon attended rural country school near Bear Creek and then Edgewood School. After his schooling he farmed with his brother Keith for over 50 years.  He also worked for Costigan Construction and  hauled milk.

Vernon loved his family very much. He enjoyed taking care of his tractors and his cars and loved spending time with cows and calves.

John Welterlen

John William Welterlen, 91, of Edgewood, Iowa, passed away at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital on Saturday, June 6, 2015. He was born on January 8, 1924, the son of Arthur and Esther (Rosberg) Welterlen. John graduated from Edgewood High School. 

John served honorably in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a US Navy Bombardier in the Caribbean (Guantanamo Bay) and the South Pacific (Saipan, Okinawa, China coast).

Upon his return from service he attended Iowa State College. It was there that John met Jane Nieman, and they were married June 1, 1947.
