2015 Elkader Elections - Garms, Pope running for mayor

Municipal elections will be held throughout Clayton County on Tuesday, November 3. In Elkader, voters will choose between two candidates for the mayor’s job. Bob Garms is running for re-election; his opponent is Josh Pope. Both took time to answer some questions from the Register.

COUNTY AUDITOR RESPONDS

The Clayton County Board of Supervisors met Monday with County Auditor Dennis Freitag, who was placed under oath and asked several questions about his job performance. Although Freitag’s attorney Peter Riley of Cedar Rapids indicated that Freitag had provided a written report to the Supervisors last Friday, Chairman Gary Bowden said that the report did not address the concerns outlined in a document earlier given to the auditor.

Donald Moser

Donald Ralph Moser, 88, passed away Tuesday, October 20, 2015. Donald was born into the family of Ralph Rudolph and Opal Irene (Borrett) Moser March 31, 1927.

The family lived on Skip Level road near Colesburg, Iowa but Donald was born in a home near Osterdock, Iowa. His mother died when Donald was almost four years of age. This resulted in Donald and his brother, Curtis, growing up with William and Jessie (Kolker) Borrett. Donald’s sister, Lois, grew up in the Francis and Ella (Moser) Troester home.

Norma Mitchell

Norma Catherine (Schoulte) Mitchell, 82, of Prairie du Chien, WI passed away on Friday, October 16, 2015, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, due to complications of a stroke. She was born on September 22, 1933, in Farmersburg Township to Oliver and Lydia (Handke) Schoulte.

She grew up on the family farm near National and this is where she developed her lifelong love of plants and birds.

Roger Moeller

Roger Frederick William Moeller, 64, of Luana, Iowa died Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, Iowa. He was born on February 18, 1951, to Orlando and Margenelle (Becker) Moeller at the Postville Community Hospital, Postville, Iowa. Roger was baptized on April 8, 1951, and confirmed on April 11, 1965, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. He graduated high school from Postville Community High School on May 23, 1969, and graduated from Northeast Area One on May 13, 1971.

CARRYING ON FAMILY TRADITION

It’s become a tradition for a member of the Berns family to achieve “Master Pork Producer” distinction. The newest recipient is Paul Berns, who was honored at the recent Clayton County Pork Producers banquet. He follows in the footsteps of his dad, Tom, and his uncle, John, who were jointly honored in 2003. Paul’s grandparents, Leon and Phyllis Berns, received the award in 1993.

Ruth Sorensen

On October 8, 2015, at 8 a.m., a wonderful wife and mother, Ruth Delores Sorensen, died in Hood River, Oregon at her home. She was a product of the Depression, strong and resilient. Her hometown was small, Elkader, Iowa, on the Turkey River. Sleigh rides, strap on skates, hearty lunches at noon, all were a part of Ruth’s childhood. She was a New Year’s baby, born January 1, 1924. Her father, Edward Burlingame, who at one time lived in Montana and rode on the prairie with American Indians, owned a general store, and knew how to pinch pennies. Elizabeth Burlingame was a fabulous cook, untiring church volunteer and warm, loving mother.

Opal Wright

Opal Neoma Wright, 101, of Strawberry Point, died Friday, October 9, 2015, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. She was born July 31, 1914, in rural Elkport, to Frank and Maggie (Noggle) Ortmann. Opal received her education in the Elkport School.

She was united in marriage to Donald Resor in September, 1931.  Later, she married Clarence Wright.

Opal enjoyed crafting, gardening, reading and exercising. She worked at Goodrich in Strawberry Point for several years.
