James “Jim” Moose

James “Jim” Moose, 55, of Monona, Iowa died on Saturday, January 23, 2016, at Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. James Ernest was born on December 11, 1960, to Albert and Marilyn (Timmerman) Moose in Waukon. He was baptized July 16, 1961, at Pilgrim EUB Church in Monona. He was confirmed April 7, 1974, at Garden City United Methodist Church in Monona. He graduated from MFL High School in 1979. Jim was united in marriage with Lesa Reimer on September 21, 1985, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union, Jarred and Jordan.

Mary Hansel

Mary Corrine Hansel, 92, of Elkport, Iowa, died on Monday, January 25, 2016, at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg, Iowa. She was born on February 10, 1923, in rural Elkport, the daughter of James and Lucy (Heitman) Phelan. Corrine was raised and educated in the Elkport area attending rural school.

Virginia Larson

Virginia Rose (Meisner) Larson, 88, died peacefully on January 20, 2016 in Bozeman, Montana.  Virginia was born September 16, 1928, to Oscar and Florence (Noel) Meisner on a farm near Elkader, Iowa. She was baptized at Peace Evangelical Church in Elkader.  She attended rural elementary school near her home and graduated from Elkader High School in 1946. She attended Central State College in Edmund, Oklahoma and later received her teaching certificate from Upper Iowa University. She then utilized her training to teach in a one-room schoolhouse outside of Elkader.

Sons & Daughters - 7,000-mile trek for deer—and family


Joel Helgerson, a 1995 Central graduate, is currently posted in Kuwait where, as free time allows, he participates in competitive races.

Major Joel Helgerson will return later this year from a deployment in Kuwait. He’ll then relocate to Alaska where he will likely finish his military career.

Some people will travel great distances to go deer hunting in Northeast Iowa. Few, however, can top the trip made by Joel Helgerson, who recently trekked nearly 7,000 miles from his post in Kuwait to his hometown of Elkader just to bag a trophy buck—and see his family and friends, of course.

Arlene Rude

Arlene Harriet Rude, 90, of St. Olaf, died Sunday, January 17, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Arlene was born April 27, 1925, at home in rural Ridgeway, to Hans and Anna (Haga) Engen. She grew up on a farm near Ridgeway.

As an only child, she loved playing with her cousins whenever she could and enjoyed riding her horses. 

She attended country school, transferred to Decorah and graduated from Decorah High School in 1943.

Eldon Severson

Eldon Lee Severson, 85, of Clermont, Iowa died Friday, January 22, 2016, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, Iowa. Eldon was born on August 16, 1930, in Topeka, Jewel County, Kansas, to Otto and Lulu (Larson) Severson. He was baptized at his parent’s home on November 2, 1930, in Jewel County, Kansas, and confirmed on June 10, 1944 at the Norway Lutheran Church, St. Olaf, Iowa. Eldon attended rural grade school in Clayton County and graduated from Elkader High School in 1948. Eldon farmed with his dad a few years. He joined the United States Coast Guard on November 21, 1951 and was honorably discharged on November 22, 1954. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Metal. When Eldon came home from the Coast Guard, he attended Iowa State University and farmed with his family.
