Louis Eberhardt

Louis Eberhardt, 54, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2016, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital, Guttenberg, IA. Louis “Louie” William Eberhardt was born on August 16, 1961, in Prairie du Chein, WI, the second of four children to LuVern and Lucille Eberhardt. Louie spent his entire life in the Elkader area. He was baptized at Zion in Clayton Center and confirmed at Peace Church in Elkader. He loved the land, the farm and, raising beef cattle. He preferred older tractors which he enjoyed working on and the history behind them. Louie also enjoyed informational programs, reading and learning about (world) war history and watching westerns or old time TV shows.

Kathryn Furman

Kathryn Ann (Kotek) Fuhrman, 88, of Volga, Iowa, died Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Gundersen Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She was born on July 25, 1927, in Independence, Iowa, to Benjamin and Ruth (Pierce) Kotek. She graduated from Lamont High School in 1945, and from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota in 1948. Kathryn was a member of the Army Nurse Corp.

On November 20, 1948, Kathryn was united in marriage to Clarence Fuhrman in Lamont, Iowa, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. To this union two children were born.

LARRY GIBBS TO RETIRE

After more than 14 years of serving on the Clayton County Board of Supervisors, Larry Gibbs (D), Garnavillo, has decided that this will be his final term.  “After careful consideration, I have decided not to seek reelection to the Clayton County Board of Supervisors,” Gibbs said.  I feel a deep honor to have had the opportunity to serve the Clayton County taxpayers in this capacity.”

Mary Bankes

Mary O. Bankes, 101, of rural Elkader, died Friday, January 29, 2016, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. Mary was born December 20, 1914, on a farm near Mederville, to George and Hilda (Lemka) Hubbard. She attended country school and Elkader Public School. She was baptized and confirmed in 1932, by Rev. Paul Kitterer in the Evangelical and Reformed Church.

She was united in marriage to Otto N. Bankes on November 25, 1933, in Charles City. Mary and Otto were long time members of Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, where she served as a chairperson of various committees. Mary also served as a 4-H leader for 10 years and co-leader for five more years.

Bonnie McHugh

Bonnie L. McHugh of Elkader died January 29, 2016, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader, leaving behind many bereaved friends and family members.  

Bonnie was born in Eldora, IA, on December 16, 1944, to Vernon and Arlene (Marken) Kinsinger. Bonnie grew up on a farm outside Grundy Center with her two sisters Judy (Charlie) Obrecht and Linda (Frank) Bennett.  She later obtained her bachelor’s degree in Family and Consumer Science from Iowa State University. She married Bill McHugh in 1967, and they lived and taught in Colfax before moving to Elkader where they spent the last 42 of their almost 49 years together.

Keith “Joe” Radloff

Keith “Joe” Harold Radloff, 88, of Farmersburg, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at Great River Care Center, McGregor, Iowa. Keith was born September 16, 1927, to Louis A. and Ruth (Matthews) Radloff in Farmersburg, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Farmersburg, Iowa. Keith graduated from Farmersburg High School in 1945 and joined the United States Army in 1945, served in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1947.

Marquette mayor David Schneider, councilwoman Rinda Ferguson, city manager Dean Hilgerson and city attorney Jim Garrett have all resigned following the council’s decision Jan. 19 not to enforce the city’s zoning ordinance, in allowing a property owner at the city’s Timber Ridge subdivision to live in a mobile home on the lot while he constructs a home.
