Lee Roy Coanner, 60, of Omaha, NE, formerly of Elkader, passed away of a sudden illness on June 27, 2019.

Lee Roy was born in Clarksdale, MS, November 29, 1958, to Willie and Rosie (Swopshire) Coanner.

Survivors include his daughters: Cadeisha Jones and her children, Ny-Dier, Royality and Willie; Suenora Coanner and her daughter, Khloe, both of Milwaukee, WI; and Raelynn Jean Coanner and her mother, Cathy Knudtson, Elkader, IA; a brother, Macon Coanner, Las Vegas; sisters Orlena Jackson, Las Vegas, and Rosie Lee Coanner, Omaha, NE; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Lee Roy was spreceded in death by his parents; brothers Frank Lee Coanner and Lourenzie Coanner; and grandson, Malachi Lee.

Darrell Lee Johnson, Ph. D., 63, of Castalia, Iowa died Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  Darrell Lee was born on January 30, 1956 in Ames, Iowa to Milton Lee and Myrtle Jane (Engelby) Johnson. He was baptized in Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills. Darrell was confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader, Iowa.  He attended school in Elkader, graduated from High School in 1974.  He earned degrees beginning with Bachelor of Science-Math from Iowa State University (ISU) Ames, Iowa 1979, Bachelor of Arts-Philosophy ISU 1982, Master of Arts-Philosophy Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, Illinois, 1985, PHD- Philosophy Southern Illinois, Carbondale, IL 1992.

Marie Erickson

Marie Alice (Belschner) Erickson Shea, 98, formerly of Volga, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2019, at the Elkader Care Center. Marie was born June 3, 1921, at home four miles north of Hawkeye by the Turkey River. She was the daughter of Lillian (Hoepfner) and Richard Belschner. She had an older brother, Ervin, and younger brother, Harold. Marie was baptized and confirmed at the Hawkeye Lutheran Church, Hawkeye.

She was very athletic and played basketball all four years of high school. She was chosen captain her senior year and named top guard in Fayette County. Marie graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1939.

She joined the Catholic religion a year before her marriage to William Elbert Erickson on February 6, 1946, at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. Five children were born to this union. William passed away on October 31, 1966. She later married Loy Shea at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Volga, on September 22, 1973. Loy passed away January 12, 1985.

There are a handful of historically significant experiences that stand above all other events in our shared identity as Americans. These are the moments we always remember. Despite the passage of time, we still respond in great detail when someone asks “Do you remember where you were when. . . .”
This month, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of one such defining moment: The first moonwalk, which took place on July 20, 1969. At 9:30 p.m. CDT, astronauts Neil Armstrong and “Buzz” Aldrin put on their bulky moon suits, wriggled out of a square opening in the lunar module, and backed down a ladder onto the moon’s surface. Back home, 600 million people watched as Armstrong took those first steps and spoke these memorable words: “That’s one small step for man. . .one giant leap for mankind.”

The Clayton County Conservation Board has been awarded two grants totaling more than $9,300 from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). Funds will be used to research, design, print, and install interpretive panels near the schoolhouse in Pioneer Village and to create murals for the Nature Center.

James Lewis Olinger, 88, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2019, at his home. He was born on August 19, 1930, in Strawberry Point, the son of Paul and Nellie (Farmer) Olinger. James received his education in the Strawberry Point Schools.  

On December 26, 1957, James was united in marriage to Mary Marlene Avis at St. John Catholic Church in Coggon. Four children were born to this union.  James was a lifelong farmer.  

James was also a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Strawberry Point. He enjoyed square dancing, as well as playing cards and games.

Delvin “Del” Dale Tieden, Sr., 64, of rural Elkader, died Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at MercyOne Health System in Elkader. He was born in McGregor, to Duane and Margaret “Darlene” Entwisle Tieden. Del was baptized and confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader.

Del attended Central Community School, Elkader. He was united in marriage to Karen Roeder on December 15, 1979, at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Del worked many years as a hired man for Richard Troester, Alto Kelly, and George Leonard. He also worked on the family farm until his parents retired from farming. Del was employed as a construction worker running heavy equipment for Carlsons, Tesar, and Moynas. He was especially happy driving semi trucks for Ray’s Excavating until he finally retired.

Florence Pauline Amelia Bruns, 100, of Monona, Iowa, died Monday, July 1, 2019, at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, Iowa. Florence was born May 1, 1919 to Emil and Amelia (Schultz) Aulerich on the family farm two miles west of Monona. She was baptized May 18, 1919, by Rev. Albert Daugs and also confirmed by him August 27, 1933, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Monona. Florence graduated from Luana High School in 1936, and attended Iowa State Teachers College.

Florence was united in marriage with Otmar H. Bruns on November 25, 1937, at St. Paul Lutheran Church by Rev. H.W. Siefkes. Two sons were born to this union: Gary Otmar and Brent Louis. The couple farmed southwest of Monona, along with having an insurance business. They moved to Monona in August 1964.

In a move as innovative as the products his company designs and sells, Fire Farm owner Adam Pollock has commissioned a mural for one side of his downtown Elkader office building. Upper Iowa University art student Jordyn Brennan has spent the past few weeks transforming the concrete “canvas” into a colorful, larger-than-life flower garden. She’s even added a nod to one of the town’s special festivals: Her garden includes several giant milkweeds.

“This is my first really big project,” said Jordyn, a native of Hortonville, WI. Usually I can carry around the pieces I do but, of course, there’s no doing that with this one. I’ve been taking lots of pictures, though. My mom’s pretty excited about it.”

Evan Drew Coobs passed away on June 24, 2019, in Champaign, Illinois. He was 55 years old.

Evan was born on November 11, 1963, in Oelwein, Iowa, the son of Edward W. Coobs and Doris A. (Rodenberg) Coobs.  He graduated from Central High School, Elkader, Iowa, (1982), the University of Iowa College of Business (Accounting) and the University of Iowa College of Law (1989).

He was married to Karen Marie (McGann) Coobs in Peoria, Illinois on July 4, 1987.  He is survived by Karen and their children, Evan Drew (Marie) Coobs II; Abigail Marie (Kale) Brinkoetter; and Katherine Anne (Jacob) Chesnut, and grandchildren Kayla Jo Coobs and Evan Drew Coobs III; siblings Earl Coobs, Donna Strange, Eric Coobs, and Cory Coobs; and numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
